Seems to me I remember discussing Montrose before. I only have one
album which my friend taped for me, I think it is their first one.
You know the one with Rock the Nation, Bad Moterscooter, Space
Station #5, ect. I don't mind saying I like these cuts a lot better
than the latest Van Halen. Ronnie taught Sammy Hagar how to play
guitar (he didn't start playing till he was 25). Bad Moter Scooter
was the first song Sammy ever wrote. When I saw Van Halen two years
ago they did play one Montrose tune. It was the one with the chorus
"Now I live my life from day to day, cuz I wouldn't have it any
other way...."
I haven't heard anything from Ronnie since Sammy left the band.

I saw Montrose live just this past fall at the Channel in Boston. It was
a killer show! (I thinkk I posted a review in the GUITAR file.) He had
two other guitarist in the band, a bass player, and a drummer. All of the
guys were incredibly talented. The drummer wasw real versatile - sometimes
playing straight rock, sometimes a jazz/rock beat, and some swing-like
stuff also. The bass player was real funk oriented. The guitars were
amazing - usually there was Ronnie doing the lead, while one or both of
the other guitarist played harmony to his lead. They were tight!
He also released a new album last fall. I don't remember the title, but
he had a small hit with the song "Telstar" (an old Ventures song).
I was in heaven when he played "Town Without Pity" (his greatest song)!

Yo bonzo,I'm a giant Montrose fan. I bought the first
album(or my mom did) right after it came out. I can say that it
was probably the first album that I ever turned all the way up on
my brothers stereo(he wasn't pleased). The first two albums with
Sammmy on them are about as heavy as it gets. Crank up I got the
fire at full volume one time and you'll be hooked for life.
glad to know another Montrose fan.

Yeah,
you can count me in as one of Ronnie's fans. I caught up with him
around '79 , when Gamma played the Glasgow Apollo (with another
defunct outfit by the name of Praying Mantis as support). His speed
and precision around those frets still stands proud in my mind.
Gamma was/is one of my fave bands of all time. I still follow Davey
Pattison's (vocalist) career with much interest. He hails from around
these parts (West of Scotland) and together with Ronnie,Mitchell
Froom, Denny Carmasi and A.N.OTHER on bass they made 3 excellent
Hard Rock Albums.
I would warmly welcome Ronnie's return to these shores under any
monicker. I hope the man keeps on playing rather than concentrating
his many talents on solely production work. I read recently that
a lot of his energies of late had been in this area.
Fave Gamma Tracks : Thunder and Lightning, Razor King , What's Gone
is Gone, Meanstreak.

PRAYING MANTIS!!!!!
I just got back from a week of Alcohol Abuse and I have realised
that I still have the 12" cut of Praying Mantis. I think it was
Sound House Tapes 2. It's Got the tracks Praying Mantis & Jonny
Cool + 1 More that I can't remember. When I listen to it now I wonder
why I payed the Money..... It was ok at the time!

From what I remember of them, the band's foundation was "the Troy
Bros" - Ronnie and Reggie?!! :-) . I had their one and only album
at that time - it was a case of "Whose supporting Gamma?...." -
WHO?...oh here's somethin' by them...buy it; play it once..maybe
twice...go to the gig...see them...."Nah wouldn't sh$% on them.."
and the album goes "bye,bye" out of the nearest 10 storey block!!
They like many other poor unsuspecting sods who used to / still
do play support, tried the old sing-a-long routine which get's
about as much response as a dead worm in a puddle of piss!!
The song was "All Day and All of the Night" which is about half
as long as they lasted.........!

The title in question (#8) is "The Speed of Sound". I recently
picked it up as a CD for $11.98. NICE STUFF! There's a good variety
of tasty guitar playing, I highly recommend it. I have a lot of
other instrumental guitar CD's and I put this one right up there
with the best of them. "Telstar" is the only cover, a nice update
on a classic Ventures tune. I had to go back and listen to the original
for the hell of it. Ronnie is not the technique monger that Satriani
is, but he can do some great instrumentals.
Other titles off "The Speed of Sound"

3) Windshear
4) Sidewinder
5) Outer Marker Inbound
The titles sort of match up with the cover art of a somewhat
paper airplane shaped block of granite/stone. I like listening to
this better than the new Beck (Guitar Shop).

I just recently put a search order out on Gamma 3. Man, that
sunovabich is hard to find. The guy wanted to charge me $15.00 for the
vinyl version, at first I thought he was crazy, but now I'm glad I did
it. There's some X-cellent sh*t on that one (Stranger, What's gone is
Gone etc.) I've heard that nowadays getting ahold of Gamma 1 and 2 can
be just as much of a bitch. The music is probably worth the search.

Guess I gotta move them to "safe storage" along with my other

BTW - If you want to chenk out what Gamma's lead singer Davey
Pattison is up to, check out the new Robin Trower " In the line
of Fire". It's the best Trower release in years!

Churchy...WoW!!! What a cast. High Volume stuff.. I saw Ronny when he
started his solo career right after the 1st album..He played at the
Orpheum theatre in Boston, Ma. They backed up someone..I think it was
Journey--1978. It was GREAT!!I remember Ronnie wailing away right when
the lights came on and until they came off at the end. It was his 1st
solo album..I forget which one..can anyone help me??

Ronnie's first solo album was : OPEN FIRE
His second solo was titled : The Speed of Sound
He has one newer solo album out and a possible Gamma reunion (?)
I saw the 1978 tour and you're right, it was Journey that
headlined. At the time Journey was billed as the wonders of the west
coast. It was the Infinity tour, the first one with Steve Perry.
And your right, Ronnie Montrose played some hellacious guitar on that
tour.

| I am a Journey fanatic too..I love the older Journey (1st 3 albums).
Infinity was great because it still had the original cast (Rollie,
Vallory, Schon, and Dunbar). Wasn't it a great concert?? I finally met
up with someone who went to this show..coolll!!! I'm curious to what
other shows you've been too since the concert scene was HUGE back then.
There was a concert showing every other week for cryin out loud!!!
Now..theres nothing...compared to then anyhow.

How is Open Fire?
I have The Speed of Sound and it doesn't do much for me. Now the
Montrose release is one of my favorites of all times.. Space Station #
5, Rock Candy, etc......
