Does anyone have any experience with Guitar Institute of
Technology?
My 18 year old son headed out to Hollywood to attend GIT summer
school the day after he took his last high school exam. I went
with him and helped him find a place to live.
He later reported that the school was NO GOOD. Nate has been
studying guitar since he was 8. He studied electric guitar
with a local (Rochester, NY) jazz guitarist (guitarist for Cabo
Freo) and classical guitar at the Hochstein conservatory.
He also studied music composition. Lots of people have told
me that he is good.
Nate said that GIT was trying to teach elementary composition and
first steps in classical guitar besides a moderately hard
electrical guitar class. He thought all this was a waste of
time for someone with his background.
Is this only true for GIT's summer school?
Nate has decided to stay out in Hollywood and try to make
it on his own.

I didn't go, but friends did.
i've heard mixed reviews on the place. Some people said it was
bogus (as far as material taught) and some people liked it. Here's
a for instance, I went to Berklee...some people there dug it and
got a lot out of it. Some people thought it was a waste of time
and got little or nothing out of it. There were people at Berklee
who hated it and were transfering to GIT, and there were people
starting the semester at Berklee who had just come from GIT!
So, I guess its different for everyone. I know at Berklee, the
school was `what YOU made it'. There resources were there for
someone to learn a lot, but it wasn't forced down anyone's throat.
I guess they assume that everyoen there is an adult and its up to
them how much they wanted to study/practice/etc.
Like I said I know little about GIT, but like Berklee I guess its
just not for certain people. I've heard GIT is more laid back in
their teachin methods...maybe you son should have applied to Julliard
or the New England Conservatory or Miami State U or Stanford U in
sunny Cal. They're all good music schools.
