    Hey, Ronnie, MY MAN.

Ronnie James Dio is a great guy. He's one of the top metal vocalists
but he doesn't have an ego problem. He's a very imaginative writer,
even though he does write mainly about fantasy (Rainbows etc..).

    Fav. RJD albums:

Black Sabbath - Heaven and Hell
    Rainbow - Rising
    Dio - Holy Diver
    Dio - Last In Line
    Dio - Sacred heart
    Dio - Intermission
    Dio - Dream Evil

He's amazing live and his band is real powerfull, I preffered Campbell
rather than Goldie, but what the heck Dio's Dio.

In my opinion the guy can do no wrong

| | I must say that I love to listen to Ronnie James Dio. I guess
it's the Medievil Lyrics and that angry sounding voice. I don't
like any of his Elf work though. It's too......Honky Tonk.......
I love him in Black Sabbath especially Die Young, Rainbow, The Man
on the Silver Mountain, Dio, any and all!

| | Good topic. I always liked Dio and I think this is without a doubt,
HEAVY METAL, period. Vivian Cambell is one of my favorite guitar
players and I love that midrangey tone he gets, that's the kinda
sound I get with my set-up (Coop b*tches about it every practice).
    My favorite Dio cuts are:

Don't talk to strangers - Holy Diver
Holy Diver - I forget what ablum ....
Evil Eyes - Last In Line
King of rock and roll - Sacred Heart
Beat of a heart - Sacred Heart

I haven't heard anything off of "Dream Evil" except "Could have
been a dreamer" (?) and it was typical Dio, which I like. I saw him
on an MTV concert once and the guy looks like a possesed Alf doll,
he looked about 4' tall. His affiliation with Hearing Aid turned
out what I thought was an excellent tune. I mean with the big guns
he had plying on it, it was destined to be hit. Bob Geldof eat
your heart out !!! Remember, "There's a beast that lives inside
you, and it's screaming LET ME OUT".

    I've got two:

Live at the Spectrum and the Sacred Heart tour - both with Campbell

of Egypt.. on the Spectrum video.

    I think Dio's great!

I really like his earlier work with Black Sabbath and the tracks
he did on Kerry Livgren's solo lp (which is cool cuz it was right
after Kerry became a born again christian and Kerry asked Ronnie
    to sing the `devil' part).

I thought Ronnie did an admirable job of production on his first
two lps (hold diver & last in line), but his production techinques
really slacked off on Sacred Heart and Dream Evil. I think he needs
to hook up with a b*thcin producer to get him back on track.

I really prefer Viv to Graig Goldie anyday. Hey Jerry, I know how
to get the Viv tone to a T! ;^)

Videos are one of Dio's downfalls and I think it has to do with
budgets. His Rainbow in the dark and Holy Diver vid's are mega
low-budget, which is too bad. So are the vid's for rock n roll children
and last in line...they really could've done something cool if they
had the $$$. I don't like the Spectrum one either. I thought the
camera fottage was real shoddy, again, looks like a budget restriction.

What do you think of Dio's wife? She's really supportive and involved
    in his work.

I thought the Hear n Aid thing was kinda bogus. Again, I didn't
like the production and/or the mix. Great musicians, buty the guitar
sounds for the most part were real lousy and the vocal sound was
nothing to write home about. They should have brought in a vertran
metal producer n enginner to help out if not run the thing entirely.
Like Martin Birch or Mutt Lange would have been nice, yeah, and
maybe Eddie Kramer or Tokes at the board!

I have a Dio video called Dio which was filmed in Holland during
the Holy Diver Tour. As said before his videos are of the low budget
variety but that does not detract from the excellence of his
    performance.

Dio has been slagged off recently for just copying material from
his earlier days with Rainbow/Black Sabbath but since these bands
sounded nothing like him before/after he was in them how can he
be accused of copying since it was really his material anyway.
    Any comments?

| | I think Dio's "sound" is totally unique. True he sounds now like
he did with Sabbath and Rainbow but look at it this way - his voice
is his instrument, it should sound the same ! As far as his writing
and the context of his songs - that's HIS mark, his place in the
industry, just like Dokken sounds like Dokken and Kingdom Come sounds
    like Zeppelin (agagaga's .... ).

Dio has only sacked Graig Goldie from the band, the other members
are still there. The reason for the parting of ways is the usual
musical differances and Dio has stated that he is still looking
to regain the original 'fire' from the first album.

Actually, last I heard from Tommy MacLendon, he was going to try
out for Dio's new band, but said it would have been awful. They
    aren't a band, it's more like a corporation and that's how they
treat everyone. He said RJDs wife Wendy is Queen Tyrant of the
whole proceedings and that the whole experience seemed
less-than-desirable. I guess RJD (I think it was him) told Tommy
that he was trying to get Ronnie LeTekro (sp?) to join the band.
Tommy laughed when he heard that and so did I.. Yeah, right, RJ.

(PS-Ronnie LeTekro is the awesome dude from TNT)

    Dio is washed up, IMO.

It's all a matter of opinion, but yes, that's exactly what I'm saying.

I think Ronnie LeTekro (however you spell his name) is an amazing

I heard one of the new Dio songs on the radio, before I knew who

Here is yet another example of bogus examples of "what is good"...

ie, the singer who can sing the highest is the best....the guitarist
who can play the fastest is the best.

Singing range and finger dexterity does not a good musician make!

Personally, here are some examples that support my opinion this is
    bogus:

o Michael Sweet - can sing REALLY high...but his tone is very nasal
sounding and he whines when he sings...great range, poor quality.
o Chris Impellitteri - can play really fast, but what he plays stinks
and he has an awful sound to boot! yawn.

Now, comparing RJD to the singer in TNT is stupid...Ronnie doesn't have
that guy's rrange, but then again the guy in TNT doesn't have ronnie's
powerful voice and unique singing style. The guitar greats, Blackmore
& Malmsteen for example, have said that if they were singers they would
want to sound just like RJD...that sould tell you something.

He's a rockin man. I think Joe P. is a "good" guitar player, and
he can't play 3 notes fast! He has feel and soul --or he used to.

RJD is probably THE best singer in the rock
industry today. Sure, he doesn't have the range
of TNT, but he definately has the training and
knows how to use his voice properly. It 5 years,
TNT will sound like a lovesick frog when he
destroys his voice. You don't have to like his
lyrics, but that's how the band is - medieval
metal. (MB, if you still see Poleki, ask him who
the best singer in rock is, and he'll tell you
Dio). As for guitar, TNT has a quick right hand,
but his left is awful (Assuming he's right

| | Ronnie James Dio has one of the best, if not the best voice in the
industry. In my opinion the most unbiased measure of a performers
talent is the effect they have on their audience. Obviously if they
are good people will enjoy them and buy their album. If they are
not as good they will not enjoy the same commercial success. If this
is the case, where does that put TNT? I don't hear much about them.
As a matter of fact I don't think I've ever heard any of their music.
But if it's better than RJD then I certainly want to! Enough Dio
defending. My favorite album is Holy Diver. I don't think he's
done any better since that one. His work with Sabbath and Rainbow
is excellent. Sign of the Southern Cross is incredible. Does anyone
have any news on a new album? Is it true he has chosen a 17 year old
as lead axe?! In one of the earlier replies someone stated that the
only show Dio played in New England was in Providence. I saw him New
Years day 1988 in Portland, Maine. The show was fantastic, but short.
Does anyone have any Dio Lyrics they could send? Any and all would
be much appreciated. After all his vocals are what make him special.

Long live the King of Rock-n-Roll!

    RE:last

I just finished reading an interview with Dio and his new guitarist

Rowan Robertson in this month's issue of Metal Scene Magazine. The

work on the new album is near completion with 8 tracks finished and

about 3 more to go. Look for a March release date. Dio will not be

producing this one; although to say he will play a large part in the

production is an understatement. This album is supposed to have a

heavier feel to it; the softness of the last outing according to RJD

was due in part to the playing style of Craig Goldie. Dio only spoke

of one of the tracks, a song entitled "Hey Angel". It concerns suicide

and its effects on people in general--focusing on in Dio's words, "The

waste of life." Throughout the interview RJD stressed that the

choosing of Rowan for lead guitar was based on his phenomenal playing

ability and the easiness in which he meshed with the other band

members. Claude Schnell and Jimmy Bain are both gone with Dio

commenting that a keyboard player was not absolutely necessary

but that it was nice to have the capability to add touches of light

or dark to the music when desired. All in all the interview was a good

one bringing all the Dio faithful up to date with what The MAN ON THE

SILVER MOUNTAIN has been up to these past two years. This has been

the JaMmin express, until the next time...reach for the stars and stay

hungry for heaven. Over and out.

JaMmin Jim (Info gleaned from the Jan. 1990 issue of Metal Scene Sans
    Permission.)

I picked up a four cut tape of stuff from the new Dio album from
    my rep over the weekend.

The tracks are "Born on the Sun", "My Eyes" and two others which
I can't remeber the names of.

Overall, RJ's vioce is still as strong as ever, and the new young
guitarist (Rowan Robertson) from Cambridge, England, is pretty good
but the songs are still drab, boring and lack the b*lls that made
'Holy Diver' such a kick a$$ album.

The album's called "Lock up the Wolves" and the songs relate more
to real life situations, as apposed to stumbling around in a dungeon

Well, I met the guy in the studio on Saturday and he was the
nicest (and shortest!) bloke I've ever met!!

He signed all my albums and tour programs and even asked If I'd like
to have my picture taken with him, so I have pics of us too!

We talked about the new lineup and he told some really funny stoires.

He had to get into the spotlight as much as possible...
At one time he motioned to the other band members to get off stage for
    one of his many solos..
He must have gone through 100 picks... Every 5 sec. he was tossing one
out to the crowd. Ripping apart his guitar strings towards the end of
the show was real tacky. You knew from the start that it was HIS band.

I can say I can't remember ever breaking a pick, but I can wear them

As for breaking strings, not too much do I do that .
Which reminds me, my classical strings are going over a year old now,

Well, being a diehard Yng and Dio fan, I couldn't
miss this show. Unfortunately, I included Y&T in
my schedule, so I ended up catching the last 15
seconds of the Yng show :'(. Ego or not, I love
                his tunes.

                Dio... dio, dio, dio...

He seems to have lost just a BIT of financial
backing for this album... No lasers, no robots
or dragons or light swords, not much of a stage
set either. Just an imitation dinosaur rib cage.
No pyramids or castles or giant daemons. The
lights that he did have though (tons of
cannisters) were very nice. Too bad I can't say
the same for his musical selection. Not ever
having heard his new album, I didn't even know
most of the songs. I also never liked Rainbow,
so those were no good either. Same goes with
Sabbath. I just wanted to hear Dio. He usually
plays a fair amount of older stuff, but this year
as previously mentioned, he played nothing from
Sacred Heart of Dream Evil. Just We Rock, Holy
Diver, Don't Talk to Strangers, Last in Line and
Rainbow in the Dark. Buck, I looked all over for
you... I'd have to up the attendence a bit from
the amount mentioned in the previous note to
something on the order of maybe 7000-8000 people.
The stage was moved out so it was almost in the
                middle of the floor.

Final prognosis: The show was musically well
done. His new guitarist is up to the job, the
keyboarddist was psyched 'cause he actually got
to do a solo (note that this was Yngwie's old
keyboardist), however, Dio better start selling
some albums or he's gonna be the last in line at
the unemployment office. I was bummed with the
light show. It's been so spectacular every other
                time I've seen him.

                ...sigh... Merlin ...
