    	Let me explain somethin', due to phone interference I noticed
    	my previous page seems a little bit buzzzzzed, but don't let
    	that stop you from having a good time!
    
    	Well, right off the bat(drumstick, don't ya' just love it) I'd
    	have to say I like to see the styles of John Bonham and Neil Peart
    	put together and find me on the other side!!!

    	   I'm sorry, but as moderator of this conference I feel I
    	must put a stop to any attempts to discuss instruments
    	other than guitars and bass guitars.  Any other instruments
    	constitute a threat to corporate security which can not be
    	tolerated.  I can't have you guys running amok all over 
    	DEC tapping on things with those drumstick, then blaming 
    	it all on me because I let things go too far here.
    
    	   Besides, it's been several hours since I deleted a note,
    	and this seems like a convenient place to start... now...
    	let's see... should I delete .1?  .2?  No, that would be
    	counterproductive... I know, I'll delete .0, that way nobody
    	will know what they're talking about...(so what's new?)

    	As we all know this is a HM conference and discussing HM drums,
    	I think would raise alot of controversy and new ideas. Now by
    	deleting .0 and having people guess what this topic is about,
    	would just cause more confusion and myself, I'm curious (that's
    	the cat in me) as to what people have to say about them(drums).
    	And I don't know of anybody that brings drumsticks to DEC and
    	beats on everything. I think you better discuss this with your
    	co-moderators and see what they think. :') At any rate, please
    	bear with us drummers and drum lovers, so as we too can have

    I personally don't think there would be much HM music without drums.
    They play a major part in it.  The 'heavy' driving backbeat is where
    the name comes from.  I can't imagine that much HM music would even
    exist without drums, they run the show.

    	   Well... I'm still not sure about all this.  I thought I
    	heard soimeone tapping on the window with some drumsticks
    	yeaterday.  Shortly thereafter I saw large grease stains on
    	the window (that's how I new they were drumsticks... or maybe
    	thighs... but certainly not wings.)
    
    	   I guess I'll let note .0 stay for now.  It's against my
    	better judgement, but since you'd probably snivel and whine
    	if I really did delete it (and you know how I hate snivelling
    	and whining), I'll give you a break this time.  Just don't
    	be banging on my windows with those drumsticks any more.  It
    	ruins my view.

    Yo Little Drumer Boy (SW),
    	You didn't think I would leave this one alone did you ???  Of
    course not !!  You ever noticed how in most bands when they do
    interviews, the drummers don't get to speak much ???  That's because
    they don't know the language very well, they are the linebackers
    of Heavy Metal, they beat on sh*t and call it music.   I'm just
    jerkin' your chain Steve, so settle down.  The power of HM drums
    is like the canvas that the guitar player paints on (I'll probably
    catch h*ll for that ..).  But if the rhythm isn't there, the picture
    isn't complete.  I don't think electronic drums have a place in
    HM, too refined for our tastes (unless you loose an arm ..).  I
    used to play drums before I found out that Marshalls are louder
    than drums and a h*ll of a lot easier to set up !!!  
    
    Here's a few of my favorite drummers (like anyone really cares !):

    OK, let's start some serious controversy here -
    
      How come, with very few exceptions (I can think of 2 - John Bonham
    and Neil Peart), drum solos are so incredibly boring? Obviously,
    this is just my opinion, but a serious one! It seems that most HM
    drum solos lack finesse, and just try and overpower you. Then of
    course you get the silly part where the drummer stops, gets the
    crowd to cheer along, and then starts a slow beat that speeds up
    as it progresses.
    
      It seems that there are very few drummers really breaking new
    ground out there. Why?

    I think it's because drummers don't have as many "tricks" available
    as guitar players do, like feedback, hammer-on's, violin bows, tremolo
    units, and stuff like that.  They twirl their sticks and do double-bass
    rolls and that's about it.  I would rather hear some flashy drum
    work during the song rather than 15 minutes of mindless pounding,
    because it does sound repititious at best.

    I'm not a drummer, but here's few of the guys who have impressed
    me the most:                              
                                              
    Rick Allen - this guys courage to continue playing is unequalled
    by any other drummer's technique.  He's gotta be (considering his
    disability) the best drummer in the world.
    
    Cozy Powell - the guys been in two of the bands I admire the most:
    Whitesnake and Rainbow.  What can I say?          
                                                      
    Tommie Aldridge - When I saw Whitesnake he was amazing. Also, listen
    to his drum solo on Ozzy Osbourne's "Tribute" album.  Awsome.  The
    Project Driver album he did with MacAlpine/Rock/Sarzo was also very
    powerful too.                                           
                                                         
    Vinnie Apice - Having seen him live twice with Dio he still makes me 
    pleasantly deaf.                                              
                                              
    Tommie Lee - His best asset is (was) Heather Locklear

    Well, most musicians would have given up if they were in his
    predicament, not many people would have even thought about still
    playing the drums with one arm.  Def Leppard could easily have
    gone and recruited some well known, good drummer but instead they
    kept Rick Allen. Why?? Coz he's the best.

    I think a LOT has to be said for the boys of Def Leppard for waiting
    on Rick.  They missed out on some bucks, but they stuck by him,
    and I think that's great.  I think Steve will back me up on this
    statement, but I think that even though Rick's new drum kit sort
    of "plays itself" at times, somebody has to program it, or sequence
    it, or whatever it is you call it.  He comes up with some pretty
    tricky little rhythms on Hysteria, like "Rocket" or "Rock It" (?)
    and it's not that easy to copy.  Rick may not be the BEST, which
    is pure opinion, but he's got more heart than most metalheads, and
    to me, that speaks louder than 2 day long drum solos.

    They may be childhood friends (they were all roughly 15 when the
    On Thru the Night lp came out ... look at the back cover photo!)
    but now, they all live very far apart from each other (rick in
    amsterdamm, someone else in Ireland, Steve slark in NYC...its
    crazy!).

    
    
    	Well, I agree with alot that has been said about Rick except
    	for the part that he's the best, if you look in Modern Drummer
    	(March '88) there are plenty more drummers with physical defects
    	and they're doing just as good as Rick in certain ways. It's
    	just that Def Lep, being who they are and what they represent,
    	has had more publicity and $$$ to do what they want. Am I wrong
    	or did I hear something about when the accident first happened
    	that the rest of the guys didn't even think about getting another
    	drummer, that they left that decision more or less up to Rick,
    	himself. Does that sound right? At any rate, with electronics
    	that are out, the possibilities are unlimited, which I don't
    	particullay care for,but I suppose if Neil Peart was to get
    	both legs and arms cut off that they would come up with kit
    	that would make him sound like everything was still there.
    	I guees the point I'm trying to make is that, if you really
    	wantit, I mean REALLY want it bad enough, there shouldn't 
    	nothin' in this world that can stop you! Except as we all know
    	MONEY, FUNDS, CASH, GREENBACKS, MULA, DENAIRO (sp?),LEARING
    	HOUSE SWEEPSTAKES!!

    Besides, I kinda have a problem with women...
    
    I love them all !  Drummers sit to far back from the screamin' hordes
    for my taste...  Drummers can't put their foot up on the monitor
    and flail the snot outta the strings whilst bangin' your head...
    
    Steven P. Whitby is by far the greatest drummer I have ever known.
    Of course he is also the greatest friend and band-mate too...so
    I'm a little biased.

    Maybe you drummers can fill me in on this. Why does everybody think
    Tommy Lee is such a great drummer?? Please shed light on my ignorance.
    By the way this might be interesting to a few. I used to go to school
    with Tommy ( real name Tom Bass ) watching him in the back of the
    school band playing those big kettle type drums was funny but ya
    gotta start somewhere. Just to think were he is now. His early band
    ( I think it was called Suite 19 or something) used to play backyard
    parties for us.

    Tommy Lee (IMO) is more flash than talent.  But flash is a talent
    too.  He's fun to watch, and in todays market, the world is FULL
    of talented musicians, but it's the one's that have talent and a
    gimmick that get the attention.  He keeps it simple while he flashes
    and dazzles ...........

    What do you drummers think about "China Boy" cymbals (I think that's
    what ya call 'em), ya know the upside down jobs that sound like
    a pot lid ???    When I saw DLR, his drummer had 1 on either side
    of his kit and he used 'em quite a bit.   Sounded good for him but
    I've also heard other drummers use them and it sounded like they
    were naming Korean babies !!

That was like what I saw on Star Search a couple years ago.
    There was this band on from So. Cal., and the drummer was
    like this 13 year-old blond boy, playing this huge kit, and 
    not only was he an incredible drummer, he also was spinning
    the sticks and pulling off all of these cool tricks ala Tommy
    Lee. I was amazed.

                again.  I think the  guy has done some good work,
                but  nothing  great.    Certainly  nothing  worth
                paying  $10 to see.  I got  to  see  Carmine  and
                Vinnie  together  for less than that (actually, I
                wouldn't have wasted the cost of the gas if I had
                known  how  bad  they were going to be).  Now  if
                Neil  Peart  or  Dave  Weckl  were to do a clinic

    	better be someone you wanna see instead of paying for some-
    	one's name. Even though I'd like to see Tommy A., but that's
    	besides the point. And as if these guys are'nt greedy enough
    	they make tapes for people to buy and they still go out and

             FOLKS,I have to say that I LOVE THIS SUBJECT and thanks
    Steve for inputting it. Now for 102.10,Soloing for some drummers
    is [regrettably] a boring way to make noise while the rest of the
    band rests.BUT,a lot of drummers (MYSELF INCLUDED),like to do a
    solo and put a lot of time and energy into it.In my opinion some
    guitar solos are boring and tasteless but then others,(such as 
    EDDIE V/H'S ERUPTION,SPANISH FLY,anything by JOE SATRIANI,the intro
    to AM I EVIL,and so on),leave much to the imagination as to what's
    next in the H/M future.So give us a break.Some drummers who suck
    on an album might blow your socks off live and vice versa.And for
    102.45,all I have to say is THANK YOU for the honorable mention
    of PEARL equipment.

    I just bought A Roland TR606 (not Midi compatable), its the gnads!!
    Great for improvising with and writing new stuff.

Yeah, I do. Since its real expensive to have a drummer live in your house and 
be on 24-hour call for when you get inspired, I find it easier to own a drum 
machine. 

I noticed several things when using it. 

First, its *very* difficult to think like a drummer (and I mean that as a 
compliment). I don't have their natural rhythm when I program stuff in - I 
tend to just put down very simple beats, and then let them expand up on it 
when they try and play the song.

Also, it tends to help my timing when playing the guitar - the drum machine 
doens't compensate if I screw up, like a real drummer will. It makes me *have* 
to pay attention!

And, its damn convenient. With the push of a couple buttons, and with 
no setup time, I have some sort of rhythm that I can work with. Many times, 
I'll just program in a beat, and then play along with that for ideas (I'll get 
inspired from a cool beat).

    I use it to sorta measure speed too.
                             
    I'll play a run at a slow speed with a slow 4/4 beat, and if I can
    play it squeaky clean 5 times, I'll notch it up a bit faster. then
    I'll try and play it very clean another 5 times, until I finally
    get to the point where I can't play it cleanly, any faster. Then,
    I concentrate on what fingering I'm using and the pick strokes I'm
    using (should I sweep that section or is it more appropriate to
    just use alternate picking). I then continue to play it cleanly on 
    the fastest speed I can, until I get enough guts up to notch the
    machine up one more 8^) Great fun.
      
    I know what you mean though Alan - about no being able to think
    like a drummer. I've got some great ideas for stuff but when it
    came to putting the rhythm section down with the machine, it sounded
    like someone rattling about in the kitchen ! awful 8^)

the ego problems.

You may be interested in this data.

Last semester, for my Experimental Psychology class, I set up a survey
of recorded music.  The subjects listened to a tape recorded on 8-track
in which the only difference was the drumming: one tape contained live
drumming and the other contained a sequenced pattern the same as the
live track played on a drum machine.

Subjects were played the tape blindedly; i.e. they did not know if they
were listening to tape A or tape B.  Then, subjects were asked to rank
the tape on a likert scale in terms of Musical complexity, musical
precision, and musical appeal.

After this, the subjects were played the tape which they had not yet
heard and were asked to guess which was live and which was electronic.
The data not only showed no significant perceived difference between
Drummers and drum machines, but the data was so perfectly uniform (my
professor and I ran this more than once to make sure we were not
mistaken) that the results boasted NO PERCEIVED DIFFERENCE between
drummers and drum machines.
