    	   Well, if nothing else, it's a cold slap in the face
    	for those who say that HM is demonic.  I can't say I
    	care too much for Strypper's sound... oh well.  They
    	probably don't like mine either.

    	YES, YES, YES Heavy Metal gospel is good !!  Some friends of
    mine are real Swaggart followers (even after the fall!) and I have
    debated the issue until I'm blue in the face.  Groups like Stryper
    reach people that otherwise wouldn't be touched.  Myself included.
    I heard one of my friends say the only reason that Stryper plays
    gospel-metal is because they aren't good enough to make it in "real"
    heavy metal.  Check out "Rockin' For The One Who Is The Rock" off
    of the "To Hell With The Devil" LP.  That song can hang with the
    best of them.  These guys are real musicians.  And I don't believe
    they are prim and proper young lads either.  They are rockers and
    headbangers but they have religious convictions and they practice
    what they preach. I'm all for HM Gospel, they got my vote.

    I like Stryper a lot too, but my favorite gospel HM band has gotta
    be Rez Band. Actually I haven't heard all that much from them but
    what I heard kicked some serious butt. I particularly like the ballad
    "Honestly" its got the same kind of feel that the Scorps get with
    "Always Somewhere", or am I just goin nuts???

    I hate the idea of Stryper preaching religon to me if i want religon
    i'll go back to being an Alter boy (a long time ago) i just don't
    think they have the right to preach religon in the middle of the
    concert or to give Bibles out to the crowd nor do Satanic bands
    have the right to preach satinism on anybody 
    
       I really like Stryper but i think the rights of other Heavy Metal
    bands are being abused because everybody blows there top when any
    band trys to preach Satanism so why should you let gospel be preached
    its not whether Religon is good or bad but if you can't have everybodys
    beliefs expressed then there should be no religon at all.

   If we(re talking about Strypers musical ability then they are very
   good, but why should we be force fed their religion?  If I wanna
   be preached to I'll go to Church.  To be perfectly frank I don't think
   that Heavy Metal and religion can be merged.  How would you feel
   if you were a regular church goer (which is fine) and you went to
   a service and the Vicar started screaming out "ROCK AND ROLL 'AIN'T
   NOISE POLLUTION", whilst wielding an axe.  It don't go does it??????????

    	I think it's just like pornography, or political songs.
    Gospel/Metal is just laying a message out, just like any other song.
    I thought we (Headbangers United) wanted everyone to be more open
    minded toward our type of music.  No harm, no foul.  It IS their
    right to say whatever they want - thats one of the main ingredients
    of HM, the right to voice an opinion.  I am not offended when
    I hear some bands screaming about all this demonic sh*t.  It's not
    my favorite but I have the choice to listen to something else.

    	   It's not really the religious message that kills the band
    	as far as I'm concerned... it's the overall wimpiness of 
    	the tunes.  Since they don't have sex, drugs, and violence as
    	their key points, I think the songs lack the emotional intensity 
	of other (more accepted) HM bands. 
    
    	   Personally, I'm inclined to agree that they have the right
    	to do what they want... I have the right not to listen.
    
    	   In case any of you wondered, I used to go to church a lot
    	as a kid, but soon discovered that I had heard the message often
    	enough.  Very little real learning goes on in Sunday school,
    	and a lot more hypocrisy can be found inside church walls than
    	inside a Heavy Metal concert hall... these things have given
    	me a bad taste for religion... anyone who feels compelled to
    	throw the old messages in front of me again earns my indifference.

    Yo MOSAT, I agree with you 1000% on the hypocracy of "most" churches
    now.  I'm kinda burned out on it too.  It was wild one time, I went
    to church on Easter Sunday, (my band had played a local club the
    night before until 5am) and I got all these strange looks because
    of my long hair and beard.  I looked up on the stained glass windows
    and saw a guy with long hair and a beard.  Nothing like a double
    standard to gain my devotion. But back to Stryper, I like them more 
    from a musicians standpoint, and they do slip a message in there too.  
    They do have some ballads that will almost put you to sleep, but when 
    they follow it up with one of their many killers, they earn my respect.
    Their songs have emotional intensity, it's just not in the direction
    we're used to bangin' our head to.  Long live rock and roll, from
    Stryper to Dio and everything in between.

    Someone had asked, many replies back, if there were other HM religious
    bands out there, other than Stryper.  Well, let me tell you, there
    are apparently a bunch!  They just don't get the publicity, right
    now that Stryper does.
    
    I went to Phoenix last week on vacation and one of my friends there
    who is really into Christian music played me some samples of Christian
    hard rock & HM.  There's some really killer stuff available.
    Unfortunately, I've forgotten most of the names of the groups. One
    was Rez (used to be Resurrection Band).  They sound a lot like AC/DC.
    Another was (I think) Messiah Prophet.  Really tough metal sound!
    There were several others with sounds ranging from AC/DC to Iron
    Maiden and such.  Didn't seem real preachy, but there wasn't enough
    time to listen to the entire albums...

     Forgot about Shawns note meant to reply.the bands I have heard
    are Messiah Prophet who kick serious a**(ok pete)The album I have
    is master of the metal,this band doesn't force the big "G" down
    your throat i played it for two weeks before I figured out that
    it was gospel metal.Also a band called Barren Cross who are 
    supposed to be the next Stryper,and finally Bloodgood who

    I'm sorry but I can't reproduce the Time article here.  I read it
    about a year ago and the magazine has long since been burried in
    a landfill somewhere.  They showed some photos of the group, described
    each member of the band and explained the reasons the band had for
    wanting to do "Gospel HM".  The part that really stuck in my mind
    was when they interviewed Tipper do-gooders.  First they had asked
    these people about bands like, for example, Iron Maiden.  They responce
    was that these people practice, promote and recruit for Satanism.
    When asked about Stryper, they said that the Gospel HM was just
    a gimmick.  How come they didn't say that they practice, promote
    and recruit for religion(ism?).  Ever since then I believe that
    the PMRC (are those the letters) is not against the lyrics in the
    songs at all.  That's just a front for the real goal; STOP HEAVY
    METAL.  They don't like the kind of music, they don't like the way
    the band members look, and they're afraid of it.
         Keep an eye out in the Doctor's or Dentist's office and maybe
    you'll see that issue of Time.  Some of thost magazines seem to
    sit around in those places for awhile.

    	I must say that Stryper is definitely an AWESOME group!!  I
    have the 'To Hell with the Devil' and 'Soldiers Under Command' tapes
    and they are both real good.  I saw/heard a new video of theirs
    on MTV this weekend - does anybody know what song it is and what
    album (if new) it is off of?

    in the business.
    

    	I saw Stryper on a Christian video show with Pat Boone.  They
    did their "Solid Gold" lip sync thing and then came over for
    interviews.  He said he liked 'em (would Pat Boone lie ??) and he
    called them Heavy Metal bummblebees because of the yellow/black
    overkill.  Oh yeah Coop, check out the Jacksons they use, no Hondo's

    Stryper kicks holy ass. I had the opportunity to see them less than
    a year ago and until then I would have laughed at you if you mentioned
    christian rock to me. After seeing these guy I have a much different
    attitude about it. They put on a great show. The part that tripped
    me out though was when they through bibles out to the crowd with
    their picture on the back.

    To tell you the truth, I don't really care what a band looks like,
    however, if they play like <insert_s_word_here> then I have no use
    for them.  I like Stryper and I like SOME Poison.

    I don't care what a performer wears or whether they use makeup or
    what.  If I like the music, I listen to it.  If I don't like the
    way they look, I don't look at them.
    
    As far as Poisen (since there is no Poisen note...) I saw them open up
    for DLR and was totally UNIMPRESSED!  Like Jeff, I enjoy SOME of their
    songs, but live, YUUUCK!  Especially CC.  He's supposed to be some
    really hot player, huh?  His entire solo consisted of repeating a Randy
    Rhodes rip-off lick then waiting for the crowd to start yelling.  Yeah,
    I was yelling too, not because I was enjoying it.  He must have
    repeated this 4-5 time, The EXACT SAME LICK!, and it wasn't even his.
    Every time he played something fast, the entire show, it sounded (and
    looked) EXACTLY the same (not the RR stuff, but still the same).  I
    thought I was gonna barf!  Their sound was also really bad, way too
    loud and very muddy (I guess they can be forgiven, since they were
    the backup band...).  But geez, I'd be embarrased to have Steve
    Vai follow me after I played such wretched and unoriginal stuff! 
    
    As for Stryper, I like their music and I like the way they stick
    to their religious convictions.  Since males don't appeal to me,
    I don't look at them much, but I do think that their stage apparel
    is striking and looks good.  That's what stage clothes are for,
    right?

    I'm a STRYPER fan & I'm a Christian like they are. No preaching
    from this corner. I'll only say this: Jesus loves us ALL, no matter
    how you look. And as a side comment to the person who mentioned
    that he or she got weird looks in a church with long hair: you are
    totally right. The stained glass picture of Christ accepts YOU as
    you are & he frowns upon the "hyprocrites" you'll find both IN and
    OUTSIDE of churches, anywhere.
    
    BTW, Stryper's latest release is "In God We Trust" . Great stuff
    (humble opinion of a non-metal fan...)
    
          PSS: They are also coming to the Worcester Centrum in November.
               Forget the date, but if you look in the Christian Music

    now.  We all breathed a sigh of relief when Stryper joined the ranks.
    They were the first to do Metal with Gospel and are the best at
    it IMO.  Whitecross seems to be gaining popularity but they all
    have a ways to go to match the

    This reminds me.  I recently purchased an album by a band called
    Messiah Prophet.  They are a Christian metal band.  It's a good album
    and is definately heavy metal.  I'd like to hear more of their stuff.
    
    I'd rank it heavier than most of the Stryper I've heard.  The recording
    I have is a little muddy.  I don't know if the production was bad,
    or just the copy I got.

    I just heard a song by METALCHURCH called "Watch the children play".
    I must say that I really liked it.  Sort of reminded me of R.J.
    Dio.  Is this song typical(sp) of their type of music?  If it is,
    I think I'll go out and get the album.

    Greg House bought a tape from White Cross, I thought it was real
    good. Lyrics weren't preachy, and the guitar sounded really good.
    They have this instrumental that sounds like EVH than changes to
    sound like Ingvay (SP) then goes off into his owwn style. If you
    get a cahnce to pick up a tape of thirs it is worth it. IMO.

    Well, now that I've listened to the tape a couple more times, I
    have a couple of comments.  BTW: It's by a band called Whitecross,
    it's the self titled album.
    
    The guitar sound on most of the songs is very reminiscent of George
    Lynch, however the solo (which Jesse mentioned), called Nagasake, is
    more like Van Halen meets Randy Rhodes meets some Baroque tune.  It's
    cool, but he went a little overboard with the wang bar (IMO). 
    
    The lyrics get a little preachy at times, but that doesn't bother
    me.  It might get on some peoples nerves.  The songs are strong
    and except for one song the entire album is metal.  That one song
    is so out of character with the rest of the stuff on the album,
    I wouldn't have even put it on there.  
    
    One comment on Christian bands in general...I think that people notice
    the content of the lyrics more because they are consciously mixed so
    that they are always audible and clear, where a lot of bands don't
    really care if you can understand what they are singing or not.

    Kerry Livgren (formerly of Kansas) has released a new instrumental 
    album, "Several Possible Muziks".
    
    I demoed the debut from Mastedon, "It's a Jungle Out There", today.
    This band includes John Elefante (ex-Kansas) and D. Amato (ex-Ted
    Nugent).  The album has some real street-level, in-your-face, rockin'
    tunes on it.

    D. Amato is none other than local boy gone bigtime Dave Amato
    originally from Natick, MA.  He used to be in a band called
    "One Way Out" and then played for awhile with a friend of mine in
    a band called "Ice".  They were really hot in the late 70's.
    
    I've seen Dave's name in a lot of places.  He must be living out
    on the west coast, 'cuz he's also done studio stuff Jimmy Barnes.
    The other night I was watching some movie and I saw his name go
    rolling by on the song credits at the end.  Now that I think of
    it, the movie might have been "Harry and The Hendersons" (hey, I
    was watchin' it with my kids, O.K.?).

    	It's funny, but Dave Amato never struck me as that great a
    	guitarist. That was Jimmy DeAngelo in August. Joey quit
    	playing in a band with Jimmy before Jimmy put together Pretty
    	Poison (defunct Worc, MA band) with guitarist Paul Cox. I ran
    	into Joey at McGillicuddy's awhile ago. He's still into jazz,
    	but makes a living doing GB gigs and teaching guitar.
    	    Glenn Evans played with Sunnydown Snuff waaaay back around
    	'70 or '71. I used to see those guys over at the tennis courts
    	in Hudson. Later in the mid '70's, he joined Johanna Wild with
    	John Butcher, but I lost track of him after that. Great drummer.
    	    Of course, we can still see Jimmy in Code Blue about once
    	a month somewhere in Worcester.

    I think what Dave had going for him was:
    
    	1.	He knew his playing limits and stayed within them
    		(consequently rarely made mistakes and sounded good);
    	2.	He had a pretty darn good voice (capable of singing
    		lead);
    	3.	He was a handsome guy (good mass-appeal);
    	4.	He must be a good all-around musician because he
    		does a lot of writing.
    
    	Basically, I agree that he wasn't a "guitar hero" type of player.
    	Maybe he's just well-connected?  Maybe well-endowed??  Maybe
    	he's sleeping his way to the top?  I did that for awhile, but
    	it made me feel so cheap!! ;^)
    
    	Jimmy and Joey DeAngelo were a killer team.  I saw Joey in a
    	punk band about '79 or so.
    
    	Sunny Down Snuff!!!  Wow, you remember them??  I used to see
    	them quite a bit around the area too.  That's where I got the
    	idea of doing side 2 of Abbey Road (they could do it flawlessly).
    
    	Dave Yates went on to do some other stuff, but I can't remember
    	if he ever hit the bit time...

    These guys aren't necessarily HM, but definitely HR.  Some of you may
    have heard of Petra.  They took on a new singer a couple of years ago
    that most of you are familiar with: John Schlitt (was Head East's lead
    singer).  They also have a new bass player.  Their latest release, 
    "On Fire!" is great.  Love that Zion guitar sound!
    
    Must be nice to replace a singer, with a 5 octave range, by obtaining
    another 5 octave range singer that has a real rock 'n' roll voice!

    Just because they rated high in a poll in a magazine about Christian
    musicians doens't necessarily classify them as "gospel".  I do
    understand that the band members claim christian religious convictions
    though (FWIW).  
    
    Just because they are Christians and musicians doesn't necessarily mean
    that their music will all have some sort of big "gospel" message.  Like
    I was telling a friend recently, I can certainly respect peoples
    religious convictions, but I get a little tired of hearing every song
    with some sort of message to it.  I think that a person (or group) can
    play music that doesn't compromise their personal beliefs without being
    "preachy" about it.
    
    This also applys to people (or groups) that want to push some political
    message through their music.  That annoys me as well.

    Well, Operation Mindcrime, if you don't know, is about corruption in
    religion and politics, Rage for Order is more a "personal struggle" and 
    society in general IMO, "Suite Madam Blue", Paradise Theatre, Grand
    Illusion, and Pieces of Eight are primarily a message about America's 
    decline(which most Americans fail to see), and Kilroy Was Here is 
    primarily about religion/society's efforts to sensor RNR.  Styx was 
    accused at one point of putting "backward satanic messages" on "Snow
    Blind" from Paradise Theatre...
    
    If anyone ever get a chance to, rent their video "Caught In The Act".

    These aren't exactly new, but I bought 2 new tapes today.  The first,
    "Triumphant Return" by Whitecross, has been winning lots of awards so I
    thought I'd check it out.  Plus it was recommended to me by one of the
    readers of HEAVY_METAL (who thought they sounded like Dokken).  Check it 
    out, these guys are HOT!  If you check out the awards earlier in this 
    note, you'll see Rex Carroll finished second to Phil Keaggy under the 
    guitar voting.  When you hear this tape, it is VERY understandable why so 
    many like him.  The guy is a PLAYER!  Rick Cua (played for the Outlaws in 
    his BC days; also voted the #1 Christian bass player) also plays all the 
    bass tracks.  Rick is also a VERY successful Christian rocker.  
    "Triumphant Return" ranked high in all metal categories.
    
    For you guitar nuts, Rex Carroll exclusively plays Zion & Custom Axe 
    guitars, ADA MP1 and Ampeg amps.
    
    The other is the latest from REZ, "Innocent Blood".  For those of you
    not familiar with REZ, they are the original Christian metal band. 
    They've been around since the early '70s and are the closest thing to
    AC/DC on this side of the fence.  There are some neat bluesy tunes on 
    here as well the the REZ trademark of the Les Paul through a Marshall 
    stack on 10!  REZ never disappoints me with their sound, nor their 
    non-compromising lyrics!

    Actually Rez usta be called Ressurection Band and their foist album was
    in like '78 or so. 

    I know Jess, but REZ sounds too cool.  They did local stuff for a long

*NOTHING* like Metallica.  It sounds like Dokken, *exactly* like Dokken.  This
is their first album though and I understand they have several out since.

    Word on the street is that the new Stryper album will be called
    "Against the Law".
    
    God's favorite guitar player, Phil Keaggy, has just released "Find Me 
    in These Fields"!  The new issue of CCM has the equivalent of a full page 
    ad for it.  Rumor has it that some of the acoustic work is reminiscent of 
    some of Led Zeppelins' old rockin' acoustic numbers.
    
    "Find Me..." is available on CD and cassette.  
    
    BTW - Phil is slated to be in Merrimack, NH (Grace Fellowship) on June

    with another band called Shout.  This is the group known for the "In
    you face" song (metal song of the year) and is led by Kenny Tamplin

    I met Joey Tafolla at a party a few years ago while he was in Jag
    Panzer. We almost talked him in to playing at our school.

    I got one of those free magazines from a local record store and it had
    an article in it about Stryper and their new image.  They are no longer
    wearing makeup, lots of hairspray, and fixing themselves up in the
    ultimate poseur style.  They are now wearing lots of black leather and
    facial hair (some of them anyway).
    
    Apparantly their new album has no overt religious overtones in the
    lyrics and is supposed to rock even harder.
    
    It seems from the article that many of their fans are unhappy about
    their new image and want them to go back to the killer-bee costumes and
    the preaching at concerts.  These people think of Stryper more as
    ministers then musicians and think they are "selling out".
    
    I haven't formed an opinion of my own on this yet, but it was pretty
    interesting reading.

Stryper Denies "Rolling Stone" Report; Defends New Album
--------------------------------------------------------

According to a report in "Rolling Stone" magazine, members of the Christian
rock band Stryper, "tired of having fans check their drinks for alcohol,"
have begun to "openly drink and smoke," and won't mention God on their next
album.  But Robert Sweet, a member of the band, denied the report.

"We don't endorse drinking, we don't try to encourage people to drink,"
said Sweet.  "We think if you're drunk it's a dangerous thing to be and an
unhealthy thing to be.  But if you have a drink, as long as you're wise
with it, it's not a big deal."

Sweet said he wasn't surprised by the inaccuracy of the "Rolling Stone"
article.  "They do have a few writers who don't care for Stryper and the
stand we take," he explained.  "You feel so helpless as a rock musician, if
you take a stand.  With Christian press, they won't drastically lie or
misquote you, but with a secular magazine where some of the writers are so
atheistic in view, they sometimes have fun with it."

Sweet said, however, that band members actually have had fans checking
their drinks.  "I've actually had certain Christian people walk up to me,
while I'm in the middle of a conversation with (another rock musician) or a
producer, and say, 'How do you do, what's in your glass?'"

He added, "As far as smoking goes, I hate smoking.  Personally I wish it
would be outlawed.  But what brought that up is (my brother) Michael said,
'If you want to smoke, that's your choice.  The Bible doesn't really make
statements about "you shalt not smoke."  It's unhealthy, and I don't smoke,
but they just re-worded those few little words and made it sound
different."  Sweet also said he wonders why it is that Christians who claim
to distrust secular press will grab on to stories like these as if they
were the gospel truth.

While denying the report in "Rolling Stone", Sweet admitted that band
members are "burned out" on defending themselves against lifestyle charges
from watchful Christians.  "If they see Robert Sweet take a couple of girls
in the bus they think the worst thing, but it might be my cousins," he
explained.  "If they see me with guys they figure I'm queer.  As a band we
say if you love Stryper, thank you, we hope we can put out music that
people love, but we can't live up to people's standards.  Nobody can.
Everybody needs to keep their own act together with God."

However, most of the present controversy stems from the group's new album,
"Against The Law".  Unlike previous productions, this album does not
present Christ "Loud 'N' Clear".  There are morally positive songs on the
album, as well as love songs and rock anthems, but there are no obvious
references to the Gospel in the songs.  The title track describes the
band's frustration with the judgmentalism they find all around them
("You've got to point your finger/You think you know it all").  "We Will
Rock the Hell out of You" comes closest to continuing its Christian metal
onslaught.  ("We're the thundering sons/We're the undying ones/With the
power of good/Evil has never won").  The Christian references in the album
are oblique at best.

Sweet says the album is still part of the band's original goals, since
Stryper always intended to be a mainstream band.  "Every single Stryper's
ever had out has never mentioned the word God or Christ in it," he noted.
"Even big songs like "Honestly", which has been played at thousands of
people's weddings, never mentioned God.  We've had songs like "You Won't Be
Lonely Anymore," which was purposely written in a double way which could
talk about God or could talk about a relationship between a man and a
woman.  But people are hearing we're the heathens who have denied God and
all that garbage, and it's just not the truth."

Mostly, said Sweet, he'd like people to start viewing Stryper as a band,
rather than as a theological entity.  "A lot of people feel we're either
angles from Heaven or demons from hell," he said.  "We're neither.  We're
people.  We're rock musicians who have had the courage to stand up for
Christ, and we've taken a lot of heat for it.  We've taken verbal abuse and
been made fun of, but we've done it."

He added, "We're still Stryper, but it is a little different.  It's a more
aggressive sound a little heavier, more of a fun sounding record.  We said
we have to do what we want to do this time, and our producer and record
company agreed.  You won't pick up this record and hear anything that says
'God' or 'Christ'.  That was intentionally done.  We were tired of people
coming back with excuses, saying 'Sorry we can't play this.'  MTV's got to
play this and the radio's got to play it or it doesn't serve the purpose.
If the record is big we have a bigger platform to stand on and say 'Look,
what's wrong with believing in Christ?'  But if you don't get the platform
you can't make that statement."

One place the band may lose its platform is in Christian retail stores,
since the Benson Company, Stryper's distribution company to the Christian
market, has terminated its contract with the band.  "In the group's
recently completed album, "Against The Law", the band has taken a different
approach with lyrical content, one that does not contain overtly Christian
lyrics.  This indicates a new direction that does not conform to the
mission of the Benson Company," stated Jerry Park, general manager and
chief operating officer in an official press release dated June 5, 1990.
"We wish the members of Stryper well in its future endeavors."  Benson not
only declined to carry the new album, but has dropped all of Stryper's
previous product as well.  The band was reportedly very disappointed with
Benson's decision.

    debut album (3 releases ago).  From what I remember, they were like a
    cross between Foreigner and Journey.  Some of the rock tunes were real
    good.  They also did some pop ballads too that sounded like "I Wanna
    Know What Love is".

    They wanna make more money

    More like they want to stop getting harrassed by people with
    unrealistic expectations for them.  
    
    They say they didn't originally set out to become preachers, just as
    musicians that believed something strongly.  The interview I read said
    they felt like everyone seemed to overlook that part of them and wanted
    to make them into preachers.  They still have their faith, but they
    want to emphasize that they are musicians and would like people to take
    them seriously as such.
    
    I still have that magazine and have intended to type in that article,
    but haven't had a lot of time lately.

    that tape at home.  Do you also know Chris Rodriguez?  He's also from
    the Boston area.  He does a lot of guitar work on all of MWS and Amy

    It's a cool tape!  Tokes did a great job on the production/mix I
    thought!  I didn't play on it...this was back when I was avidly
    pursuing a career in Audio Engineering.  I helped as assistant 
    Engineer on the entire over-dub and mixdown sessions, which were done
    at nearby Blue Jay Studios in Carlisle, MA.
    
    One thing I thought was weird was that Tokes was doing all the final
    mixes for the album, and one day MWS flys up from Tenn. and walks in
    and says "I hate them all -- do them over!!!"  That was it...*hundreds*
    of hours of mixing nuked in one sentence.  Tokes was pissed!!  IMHO,
    the remixes don't sound as good as the original Tokes mixes!  I still
    have MWS's home address and phone number somewhere...I should give him
    a call and demand to play in his touring band!  ;^)

    I agree!  I brought it back with me after lunch.  Dann Huff (now of
    Giant) also did some guitar work on that tape.

    Yeah they have a credit in the liner notes.  Most of the recording was
    done in New York City.  I remember reading a funny story about that. 
    It seems producer John Potoker was also doing some work for the Rolling
    Stones at the time.  Old Mick called the studio one day and MWS
    answered the phone.  MWS said what a thrill it was to speak with one of
    his childhood rock heroes.

    That sounds drastic but I can see where Christian rockers have to have
    a little perfectionist nature in them.  They have to try twice as hard
    as the secular bands to get exposure and notice.

    Nashville, right?  You should!  His last release didn't have the edge
    that Big Picture had.  My wife is a BIG MWS fan so we always see him
    when he comes to Phoenix.

Stryper's Heavy Metal Makeover
The risky conversion of Christian metal-gods.  By Steve Appleford

After a long day of staring into the camera - posing, grinning,
strutting, thrusting, pointing, and pouting - the worn-out and
ready-to-relax members of Stryper are hiding out in the darkroom. 
Singer Michael Sweet leans casually over a stack of empty boxes, and
if the nature of the chemical fumes in the are were more certain, he
might consider lighting up another cigarette.  Of course, smoking in
public would have been unthinkable a year ago, when Stryper was still
preaching Christianity through hard rock, and the band was viewed as a
symbol of earthly virtue by it's fans and as unwanted moral watchdogs
by the more hedonistic members of the metal community.

"Against The Law", Strypers first attempt at a strictly secular
record, as more in common lyrically with pop rockers like Bon Jovi
then the gospel.  Their days of singing aggressively pious songs,
dressing in yellow-and-black honey-bee outfits, and throwing bibles
into the audience are over.

"There's probably going to be people out there that think we don't
believe in Christ, which is totally absurd," says Sweet, his straight
brown hair tumbling over the shoulders of a black leather jacket. 
"For a band to do what we did, you would really have to believe. 
you've really got to mean it, because, boy, you really go through the
firing squad."

The mood today is far different then the last time Stryper visited
this Los Angeles photo studio.   Six years ago, the quartet spent much
of the day kneeling in a dressing room, hands held high, praying
dutifully.  That angelic look of glamorous perfection - shiny, teased
hair and complexions airbrushed to the smooth, unblemished look of
candle wax - will be replaced in this shoot by a more earthly image.
Guitarist Oz Fox has even grown a trim beard.

It's a risky thing for an established band to undergo a sudden image
change.  The risks are even higher for a group that one over a million
record buyers with it's original image, as Stryper did with "To Hell
With The Devil" in 1986.  The group's longtime audience is almost
certain to feel alienated and angry, and there's no guarantee that
Stryper will earn any new fans.

Thrash-metal act Savatage faced a similar situation when it softened
the band's sound in an effort to get on the radio and broaden its
audience. "We had kids coming back into record stores and throwing the
record back at them saying, 'This isn't Savatage,'" claims Bob
Chiappardi of Concrete Marketing, a five-year-old company specializing
in hard-rock management and promotion.  "It completely destroyed their
credibility, and it took them two records to bring it back."

Soon after German hard-rock group Accept found success in the United
States with its rough-edged "Russian Roulette" album, gruff vocalist
Udo Schneider left for a solo career.  His replacement was
Colorado-born David Reece, whose singing style had a smoother, more
commercial character.  The resulting album, "Eat The Heat", was such a
commercial disaster that the band dissolved in disgrace.  Lead
guitarist Wolf Hoffmann now works as a nature photographer in Germany.

But not all style changes result in the end of a musicians career.  AS
sideman in the Vinnie Vincent Invasion, vocalist Mark Slaughter and
bassist Dana Strum dyed their hair and wore makeup at the behest of
bandleader Vincent.  When the pair broke off to form Slaughter last
year, they dropped the glamour in favor of a more natural look and
quickly scored a Top 20 album with "Stick It To Ya".

The members of Stryper say they understand that some fans may be
unwilling to accept the new image, but the years working as an overtly
Christian metal band have been frustrating, too.  Interviews with both
the music and mainstream press inevitably ignored Stryper's music,
focusing almost exclusively on the band's opinions on AIDS, abortion,
the Moral Majority, televangelists, sex, drugs, and the latest
movements of Mother Theresa.

"We want people to look at us as a musical rock 'n' roll band," says
Sweet.  "We've never been looked at in that way. It's always been the
message and the whole image. I don't think our music has ever been
recognized like it should have been."

The Christian connection may have kept Stryper off the celebrated
Monsters of Rock tour, which would have put them on the same stage as
such party bands as Van Halen.  And the industry listening party in
New York for 1988's "In God We Trust", which ultimately sold 800,000
copies, 100,000 of them through Christian bookstores.  According to
Chiappardi, much of the hard-rock community has taken Stryper's
clean-cut image to mean it's members are "wusses," an impression
Stryper finds most annoying,

"White Lion had all kinds of misconceptions about us until they went
out on the road with us," says bassist Tim Gaines.

"One was the before anyone could eat dinner - crew, band, anybody - we
would have to bless the food," says Sweet, smiling.  "And they believed 
that.  This is what they heard."

The image change may release the band from serving as symbols of
Christianity and being subjected to public challenges about what they
were drinking or where they spent the previous evening.  After working
with the band for five years, Lisa Gladfelter, a publicist for
Stryper's label, Enigma Records, says the new image allows the band to
relax for the first time.  "They seem a little bit less stressed and
uptight then they at other times in their career.  They're a little
more easy-going. I don't think they're as uncomfortable with
themselves."

Still there's bound to be some nervousness about de-emphasizing the
religious element so important to many of it's fans.  The title track
of "Against The Law" responds with rougher melodies and vocals, but
insists, "We've still got the fire burning in our soul/But we're just
rockin' harder.../Don't you point your finger/You think you know it
all/We want you to remember/We don't live for you."

Until now, Stryper's most vocal fans have written letters to music
magazines about the band's wholesome image, contrasting it with other
metal acts, says Steve Peters, editor of both "Metal" and "Thrash
Metal" magazines.  Peters isn't convinced that the band's new,
non-preaching attitude deserves a negative response - no matter want
the actual reaction.  "Ultimately, I don't understand why anybody
would want to hear a band do something the same way for 10 albums in a
row.  Although Anthrax took a lot of flak for doing 'I'm a Man,' [It's
really "I'm The Man' -gh] their rap parody, I thought it was
hilarious."

Roger Marsh, program director of KYMS-FM, a contemporary Christian
radio station in Orange County, California, isn't convince the change
represents an overwhelming blow either.  "Five years ago, [Stryper's
new image] would have been a serious problem, because there was
nothing: There was Stryper, that was about it."  Now, he notes,
several other Christian metal bands - Holy Soldier, Vengenance,
Guardian - have invaded Stryper's old territory.

Even so, the band has already faced some complaints from its longtime
admirers.  Guitarist Fox confesses that he was recently confronted by
a fan who said, "You shouldn't change what God's called you to do." 
At Enigma Records, Gladfelter has received a few angry letters from
fans prior to the release of "Against the Law".  "You guys look as
disgusting as Slayer now," one read. [they obviously haven't ever seen
Slayer... -gh]  "We like you the way you were."

"These guys were my heros for a while," says Tim Jacobs, a 15-year-old
high school student from Chatsworth, California.  "I always had
respect for them.  I don't know what to say now. I guess they're just
trying to make money."

A Stryper fan since 1985, Jacobs and an friend Dustin Kleinschmidt
travel monthly to a mission in downtown Los Angeles, where they play
acoustic guitar for the homeless people.  "I'm disappointed," says
Kleinschmidt, a recent convert to Christianity, in part due to the
influence of Stryper.  "I thought it was neat that they could stand up
for what they believed in and play the music that they loved.  I'll
probably still listen to the old stuff, because I believe what they
were saying.  But I don't think I'll buy the new stuff.  It's kind of
like they're flaking out."

Marsh, whose station programs some of Strypers power ballads, says
that Christian performers such as Amy Grant have maintained successful
careers, even as they stray from religious topics.  Still he
recognizes some of the risks in making such a move.  "I don't envy any
of these musicians.  In the Christian music industry you're looked
upon as a minister.  If you're taking the name of the Lord out on the
road, performing songs, and if you're going to be teaching any type of
ministry, the judgment will be far more severe if you screw up."

Interesting article on Kenny Tamplin in the new CCM.  For those that don't 
know him, he was the founder of Shout that won many Christian metal awards.
His new band is Magdallan and he is also releasing a solo album this month "Axe
to Grind".  He's also Sammy Hagar's (Van Halen) cousin.

He uses a lot of hot session players in the studio, especially on the new solo

"I give God all the credit for that," explains Tamplin.  "I'm just kind of an
instrument that has a big mouth and God sorta takes over.  I don't get any
credit for leading anybody to the Lord.  I go out of my way to let people see
my life and, if that influences them, it was definitely a miraculous hand of
God.  I strive for real musical professionalism, which demands a lot of respect
from another musician.  They don't care if you're a Hindu or whatever, as long
as your chops are up.  It just really opens doors without having to cram things
down their throat that they wouldn't normally be open to."

Kenny Tamplin and Lanny Cordola are currently in the studio to release 
Magdallan's first release in early 1991.  They've been signed by Chameleon 
Records with Capitol distribution with a goal to "utterly annihilate the 
radio waves!"

MSI has release another instructional video for the musician.  The folks
that brought us Phil Keaggy's and Alex Acu�a's videos now release Abraham
Laboriel's video on bass guitar.

Mylon LeFevre's cover of "Shower The People" (James Taylor) has been released 
on VH1.

Chagall Guevara, the band that features Steve Taylor, Dave Perkins, 
    Lynn Nichols, and Mike Mead will have its song "Tale o' Twister" included 
    in the 'Pump Up The Volume' movie soundtrack.

    Bob Hartman (Petra's guitarist) has been honored by Orlando's Hard Rock

    first Christian Rock band to be represented by the HRC.  It's in good
    company with guitars from Buddy Holly, ZZ Top, Elvis, and Paul
    McCartney.

    Magdallan is still in the studio.  "It could be the finest record ever
    produced - sonically speaking," say Kenny Tamplin.  One song has 90
    tracks of vocals.  Comparisons to early Queen, Rush, and Yes "meets the

    I first saw this guy in GFTPM.  Then I happened to buy the new issue of
    "Heaven's Metal" to discover he has his own guitar advise column in
    there.  
    
    I then wandered down to the bookstore to listen to his debut,
    "Woodpecker Stomp".  This album ROCKS and has superb guitar work on it!
    It is on the Pure Metal label (same as Whitecross).

    this is gonna sound really wierd, but I had a chance to attend the
    coolest church in Phoenix this weekend.  It's called "David's Cave" and
    had something to do with King David.
    
    Get this:  the house band is a metal band.  All hymns, choruses, etc.
    are done to metal/thrash/hard rock.  The preacher has blonde hair about
    halfway down his back and wore leopard skin tights.  Most people in the
    congregation dress as if they're attending a concert.

    I'm gonna have to check out this band Crystavox.  They have a top 10
    song in all 3 categories!
    
    King's X broke thru on the Rock chart.  The Choir (Christian rock's
    most popular alternative band) hit it big with the single off their new

    For those of you that have a copy of the Christian HM sampler, the

    Well I finally had a chance to buy "Woodpecker Stomp" today.  If you
    like Joe Satriani or Steve Vai type instrumental guitar work, go down
    to your local Christian music store and buy/order this tape NOW!  I
    swear this guy IS AS GOOD as the 2 giants above!  The whole album is 
    HOT, HOT, HOT!
    
    He ends the album with a really cool intrumental rock version of
    "Amazing Grace" too.
    
    As for the guitar stuff, he's endorsed by and plays Yamaha guitars with
    DiMarzio pickups.  I'm not sure what amp he's using, but he uses the
    ADA MP-1 for a preamp.
    
    Since he writes a monthly guitar advice column in "Heaven's Metal", I'm
    going to have to subscribe now. ;-)

Word Records, the world's largest producer of Christian music, has entered
a licensing agreement with Epic Records (now owned by Sony Music
International), home of artists such as Michael Jackson, Gloria Estefan,
and Indigo Girls; to distribute and promote Word artists' products in the
mainstream market.

The agreement will include all of Word's owned and distributed labels, and
calls for approximately 75 new titles to be released to mainstream, plus
over 100 catalog titles, all to be determined in the coming months.

Epic president Dave Glew called the agreement "a major coup" for the label,
stating, "The baby boomers are growing up, and are beginning to go back to
churches and search for meaning.  Now is the opportune time to expose them
to these artists and their inspirational messages."

    The 22nd Annual Dove Awards will be broadcasted on TNN (The Nashville 
    Network), Thursday, April 11, at 9pm.  This is TNN's second year
    showing the Doves.

    The Petra concert was pretty good on Saturday night.  I highly
    recommend seeing them when they're in your area.  Most of the songs
    were from the latest album, but they did some older songs like "Judas
    Kiss" and "It is Finished".  I really enjoyed John Schlitt's testimony
    too about how he came to Christ and his days with Head East.
    
    Bob Hartman has an AWESOME guitar rack!  I had a bird's eye view of his
    setup.  That thing was at least 16 spaces high and lit up like a
    Christmas tree!  He used his Zion guitar most of the night, but also
    used a custom Anderson (w/ reverse headstock) for a few songs.  He uses
    an Ampeg head for his rhythms and the Mesa/Boogie for leads.
    
    Kim Boyce was the opener.  This was a big mistake IMHO.  It's like
    pairing Madonna with Foreigner!  For one thing, she used background
    tapes (which I loathe) in a HUGE arena.  Her husband of 10 months was
    one of her backup vocalists.  I'm not into dance pop, but the only song
    I liked was her cover of "Celebrate".  She has a good voice, but I just
    couldn't appreciate the music.

    I only brought my marshall into my church once.  It was for an Easter 
    mass...the organist, this trumpet dude, and I played this piece.  I
    wasn't doing power chords, moreso I was the 2nd trumpet.  Was pretty 
    cool.

    My KH M1/Ibanez RG550 make their presence known EVERY Sunday! ;-)

    I can't say, I've never heard a Dokken song {blush!}
    
    To me they sound like a cross between the Scorpians and old AC/DC.  The
    singer reminds me a lot of Bon Scott.

    And FWIW, you are incorrect in saying that nobody would go see them. 
    There are many Christian bands I'd love to see!  Holy Solidier,
    Whitecross, Bloodgood, Stryper, REZ, etc.  Problem is that if you post
    concert lists in here that have everything from easy listening music to
    hard rockin metal stuff, I don't know how to pick the ones I'd be
    interested in seeing.  Sure, I'm going to skip them all because I
    haven't heard of many of them and I'm not going to waste my time and
    money to go see someone that may well be a mellow pop band.  That just
    doesn't appeal to me.

    I have the first Whitecross album and it sounds very much like early
    Dokken, like Tooth and Nail vintage.  You know, glossy produced
    sounding melodic metal with a little edge.  I havn't heard any of their
    more recent material, but I've heard they've progressed from the Dokken
    sounding stuff to something a little heavier.  I've been meaning to
    pick up one of their more recent ones, but I haven't yet.
    
    FWIW I didn't think the singer sounded like Bon Scott at all...  I did
    think he sounded rather like Don Dokken.  Maybe the years have degraded
    his vocal chords?

    - Holy Soldier is in the studio working on their next album.
    - Whitecross is touring Illinois, Indiana, Maryland, and New York over
      the next 2 months.
    - Bloodgood is in the studio.
    - Stryper seems to have fallen off the face of the earth.  I know
      Enigman filed Chapter 11 so that may have something to do with it.
    - REZ is touring Illinois in July and Norway in August.

    Just to add that STRYPER are playing the U.K. on Thursday 22nd Aug. at
    the Marquee (London) and at the GREENBELT festival on the Sunday, the
    25th Aug.
    
    Unfortunatly I'll be at Greenbelt on the Thursday so I'll only get to 
    see them as the headline act on the Sunday at Greenbelt!

    In my quest to update the CCM-Secular cross reference, I've been 
    borrowing some tapes so that all these new bands get recognized.  The one 
    I'm listening to now is "Hot Metal Summer III - Hot Licks, Cold Facts".  
    The sampler contains interviews with each band, asking them where they 
    stand for Christ, as well as one song for each band.  Some of these bands 
    are real hard core HM/Thrash.  My tastes usually straddle that fine line 
    between HR and HM.  Here's what the tape has:
    
    Tourniquet - You Get What You Pray For (good thrash style sound)
    Deliverance - Weapons of Our Warfare (sounded like Iron Maiden to me)
    Sacred Warrior - Master's Command (these guys are much more to my
            liking.  Nice groove to this tune, with a real edge.  The
            singer reminded me an awful lot of Ronnie James Dio, but with
            more range.)
    David Zaffiro - Blue Ice (former guitarist for Bloodgood turned
                    producer.  He produced Holy Soldier among others. It's
                    obvious this guy is too talented and has more musical 
                    interests than just metal. I really enjoyed this 
                    instrumental tune too!  )
    Angelica - sneak preview from forthcoming album (this instrumental tune
               is also awesome!  Sounds like something Whitesnake (w/Steve
               Vai) would do.)
    
    Vengeance Rising - Warfare (these guys claim to be friends with, and
                 have witnessed to, members of Metallica, Slayer,
                 Testament, Dark Angel, and Venom.  They said all the bands
                 respect them for their stance and beliefs.  The influence

                 I'll skip this one.  I liked it, good live recording.)
    scaterd-few - Kill the Sarx (alternative with a metal edge.  A little
                   too wierd for me and I've never heard anyone like them.
    Ransom - sneak preview from forthcoming album (metal band with a female
    vocalist.  Sounded really good to me!  Kind of like Ann Wilson (of
    Heart) in a real hard rock setting))

    DYH the double standards in rock music!

    A recent issue of "Stereo Review" had a review on "Faith Hope Love"
    by King's X.  The reviewer evaluated the album accurately and 
    openmindedly, but I'm disgusted with his "warning" that King's X is a 
    Christian band with positive lyrics.

    He implies that non-Christian listeners tolerate their religious views
    and simply focus on the powerful secular music.  That's ironic since we
    Christian rock fans have had to "tolerate" decades of rock lyrics
    elevating drugs and alcohol, demon worship, wanton sex, violent acts,
    and various asocial or perverted escapades.

    This attitude that Christian themes might have to be "tolerated" is all 
    too common in the mainstream media.  In reviewing Donna Summer's new
    album in its September 6, 1991 issue, "Entertainment Weekly" reassures
    its readers, "Don't worry," because the album "doesn't include any
    crusading born-again numbers, like the 1980's The Wanderer."

    The American culture seems to have accepted the notion that it is
    acceptable for music to promote anything but Christianity.  Prince's
    performance on the MTV Music Video Awards (saw it last night on Fox) in
    September is seen as a Major Artistic Statement while the channel
    routinely ignores Christian music.  "Entertainment Weekly" suggests
    that some parents may consider Michael W. Smith's Go West Young Man
    "subversive" because, since the music is so palatable, their children
    will be unwittingly exposed to his Christian message.  Meanwhile, there
    seems to be no concern that those same kids are snickering over the
    acronym of Van Halen's latest album title, For Unlawful Carnal
    Knowledge.

    Christian have tolerated a numbing barrage of sin glorification in
    music, movies, television and other entertainment media.  But when an
    Amy Grant, Michael W. Smith or BeBe & CeCe Winans break through into
    the mainstream culture, their Christian worldview is not easily
    tolerated.  That's scriptural, of course, but it's the double standard
    that irritates me.

    Maybe it's time for more of us to let our voices be heard.  We need to
    put the world on notice that if somebody has to tolerate somebody, then
    it's we who are merely putting up with them, not the other way around!

    
    
    Mikey, there is ALOT of people who complain about heavy metal music
    that doesn't have religious references, or rather has anti-religious
    references, and sexual references.  You can't tell me you haven't heard
    of cases were parents certain groups haven't complained, formed the
    PMRC, banned certains records/lables, etc. ?  From what I remember, the
    PMRC was formed because of a Prince record.
    
    You may find one parent who won't let their child listen to whatever
    because of the religious references, and you'll find ten more parents
    who won't let their children listen to Skid Row because of the abusive
    terms.
    
    I don't think religious music is getting picked on.

	Hello,

		I just thought I would put in a review of a tape I 
	borrowed from my friend that I might end up getting.  The
	tape is called 'Ultimate Metal'.  It is a tape that was
	released in 1989 with a bunch of Christian Metal bands.
	I find a lot of the songs are very good.  A few of them
	really rock, which I didn't expect from Christian Metal
	bands.  I think that some of them are much better than
	the mainstream Christian metal group Stryper.  The following
	is a list of the songs and what I thought of some of them.
	I was really surprised how good they are...

    Side 1.
	Mastedon - "It's A Jungle Out There" - (good song the singer
				sounds like the lead singer from Cinderella)
	Shout - "Faith, Hope & Love" - (I like this song a lot.  It is a 
					great song to sing along with.  It's
					a harmonica metal song, very good)
		(The next four I like a *lot* good regular HM songs.)
	Messiah Prophet - "Blinded" 
	Sacred Warrior - "Sword of Victory"
	Neon Cross - "Heartbreaker"
	Scarlet Red - "You live fast"	
    Side 2.
	Whitecross - "Living in a Lost World" - (a bit slower but still cool)
	Petra - "All Fired Up" - (An okay song with a lot of keyboards.  Most
				  of the other songs have no keyboards.)
	Vengeance - "Burn" - (I don't care for this song very much at all
			      the lead singer does kind of a Sepultura, Napalm
			      Death type of singing deal.  If you ignore
			      the singer it is not a bad song.)  8)
	Rage Of Angels - "Do You Still Believe In Love" - (This is probablly
			      one of my favorites.  Good rockin' song)
	Rez- "Shadows" - (an okay song nothing to write home about. Still good
			  though.)
	One Bad Pig - "Let's Be Frank" - (I fast forward through this groups
					  song.  I can't stand it.  It is 
					  sort of a Funk, rap, Metal type of
					  song.  Not my style!!!  Maybe sort
					  of in the line of Primus? I dunno
					  anyway I don't like it.)

	All in all I was *very* surprised I liked most of the songs and 
	they don't have an overly heavy Christian message.  As a matter
	of fact most of them I heard no message at all.....

        My dad used to take me down to the christian record store and make
     me buy the albums with my own money.
       Most are rip-offs of the original artist they try to copy to steal

    I donno man, you heard any lately?  Mike Heiser sent me a tape he put
    together with a bunch of Christian rock bands on it and it's excellent. 
    There's a lot of stuff equal to or better then the older Stryper

    I've been listening to some heavy Christian music lately and thought
    I'd put a couple of comments in here.
    
    The band Tourniquet is absolutely amazing.  Heavy speed metal with a
    LOT of creativity to it.  They definately deserve all those awards for
    the Psycho Surgery album, it's excellent.  Likewise for Deliverance,
    but they're a little different style.
    
    Another interesting band is Vengence Rising.  It's musicially similar
    to death metal, but with a different lyrical content.

    I'll have to check for sure, but I think Roger Martinez was with
    Vengence Rising.  There was definately someone named Martinez in the
    band, but I don't remember the first name.  
    
    Not sure I'd describe the vocal noises he made quite as "singing" (more
    like gargelling or something).  Definately that "death metal" sort of

        metal from Pa.  They played at Michigan death fest. few months back.  
        Matter of fact, they'll play with Mortal Decay, Headrot, Phlegm and 
        Necrofeast on May 10th.

    Well you all.  By mistake I found a store in Auburn that sells those
    heavy metal tapes that Mike tells us about!  I noticed White Cross
    and Petra tapes.  So now, if someone will reiterate to me what the
    heaviest bands are - I forget cause I never thought I'd find a place
    that sells the stuff!  As a rule I don't like Stryper type stuff - I
    like more heavy and/or alternative type metal.  Help?
    
    
    The store is called "The Burning Bush" and is in a small mini-mall
    about a quarter of a mile on the left from the entrance to the Auburn
    Mall.  Its a religious Hallmark type store, I don't beleive they are

    The heavier ones I've heard are Deliverance (highly recommended, very
    heavy), Tournequit (also heavy), Barren Cross (similar to Iron Maiden,
    but not so repetative), and some like that.  If you like "death metal"
    style, try Vengence Rising.
    
    Whitecross is excellent, but not for headbanging per se.  They're more
    like heavier pop-metal, sorta like Dokken (their early stuff is very
    like Dokken).

    I wouldn't call One Bad Pig "alternative", more like hardcore to me,
    but their kind of hard to pin down as their style is all over the
    place.  Very eclectic and interesting!  Vocals *very* rough with the
    songs ranging from a rough ballad to speed metal with about everything
    in between (sometimes in the same song).  I can't think of any other
    band to really compare them to, a very original sound.
    
    Another good one not mentioned is Bloodgood, not as heavy as like
    Deliverance or Tournequit (who btw, sound rather "Anthrax-y"), but
    still hard rock enough to stay interesting.

    Crimany man, Stryper had some cool stuff but I don't think they're the
    *best* Christian rock ever.  
    
    Personally I thought Barren Cross's stuff was pretty good.  Some of
    it's like Iron Maiden, but I think it's more creative.  
    
    If you weren't hung up on poseur bands maybe you could appreciate this
    band for their music instead of how they dressed for the cover of one

    What I listen to is my business and I don't think your in any position
    to throw stones. If you weren't so hung up on lame alternative bands 
    maybe you could see that under that blue and white of Barran Cross
    are the biggest Stryper wanna-bees in the world. PLus the songs are
    weak in comparison. 
          The only reason they were ever signed was the fact that they
    jumped on the bandwagon and the record company had hopes of them doing
    half as good as Stryper. Didn't happen....
    
             FWIW-I still hold my position. Stryper was and is the best
    Christian band EVER!

    When a band comes out and looks just like another band that came out

    I saw the band Tourniquet in concert Saturday night and they were
    outstanding!  Very tight!  Both guitarists were excellent and the
    overall band sound was great.  A very good show, too bad I had to go by
    myself.

    album, the CD I have of theirs ("Rock for the King") they neither look
    nor sound like Stryper.  They're dressed in jeans & t-shirts in the

    Barren Cross is a great band!!. They do not try to be like Stryper.
    There style is ther own. The only way they mite sound like Iron Maiden
    is because of the singer (Mike Lee). The music is totally different.
    They are very creative. And everyone dresses in some form of
    attire--EVERY BAND!! Let's listen to there music. This is whats
    important. Saying things about a band because of there attire is very
    single-minded. After all we are talking about music here...Right...

    I'm putting this here since there isn't a generic "Christian Rock" note
    in HM!
    
    
    Jammed this past weekend with this drummer I was in a band with in the
    late 70s/early 80s.  This guy was totally into HM and the Satan thing
    -- drinking, heavy drugs, the Book of Shadows, witchcraft, etc.  He
    used to worship Satan and cast spells and the whole nine yards (It
    was this 'involvement' that broke up our band).  Anywho, he found the
    Lord, and is now a devote Christian (has been for over a decade now).
    
    Anywho, on the way to the jam, we were talking about music, HM, and
    "Christian Rock".  He was strongly against Christian HM (Stryper,
    Whitecross, etc.), as his take was "I've been on both sides of the
    fence, and these Christian HM bands are NOT preeching the gospel in
    their music!".
    
    I was sort of taken back by this proclomation -- how could a Christian
    man be strongly against other Christians and their music??  Is there
    a lot of these kind of separatism in the Christian circle on HM and
    Christian bands??

There's just bigtime separatism in life itself, IMHO. It just seems there
are so many people into so many things and some try to say *their* 
interpretation is the *THE* interpretation, at least that's what I've
run into. Because there's no 'preaching' or 'Bible quoting' in the music,
then it's considered Satanistic ?!

As far as Stryper being a devil's band; if they never sang one word of
Christian-related lyrics and never sang one word of devil worship, but 
sang of helping others and did good things for people with their fortune
and their time, my opinion would be that they were far from being unholy.

I don't listen to them, I have to admit. But if I did I'd try very hard to
not judge them just as I try hard to not judge anyone else. This is just not
an easy thing to do. I also try to not preach, for the one reason that I
don't know the answers.

Blatant satanism I try to avoid at all cost ;^)

    Yeah it was probably 14th-hand hearsay.  Funny thing too is that person
    is a former active member of GUITAR.  He sold all his electric gear
    after becoming a Christian.

    I liked that one too.  I've never heard anything so utterly ridiculous
    in my life.  I think that I'm reasonably aware of what's happening in
    my pelvic region and I can honestly say that rock (or any other type of
    music, for that matter) has never had any type of effect there at all.

Subject: New Christian Radio Show in Boston Area!

This is an message to let you all know about a new radio show coming
on this weekend on the MIT radio station in Boston. It's called 
"A little R and R" and will be hosted by Michelle and Scott Deering
who will showcasing the latest in alternative Christian music including 
heavy metal, rock, rap, house music, and other kinds of stuff.
The program will be on the air this Saturday, May 8th, from 4-5pm on 
WMBR, 88.1 (first on your FM dial...). Hope you all can tune in! :-)

    yep, jack and i were laughing at the big digital sign advertising petra
    after leaving rush.  i wouldn't even have known if it hadnt been for
    that sign.  where are they promoting this thing, in sunday morning
    mass?
    

    Well the promoter (Newsound) supposedly advertised this in record
    stores, book stores, and mailers to people on their mailing list.  I
    knew about it in January.

    If you're looking for a store with a good CHR/CHM selection beyond the
    bigger names that can be found in Strawberries try the Morning Star
    store in the Twin City Mall (Leominster-Fitchburg, on South St. by Rt. 2 
    intersection).  They also have one in West Springfield and may be opening 
    one up in Boston soon.  The owner is a good friend of mine and you can
    tell him I sent you.
