Congrats on having a musical son! May your years be filled with
music - (that you can stand to listen to!)
I haven't bought a stomp box in so long, some of the brands I thought
were cool, might not be worth stepping on...
Here's something that's always good - get A/C adaptors for them. The
battery headaches are not worth it. There are cases (as cheap as $19)
that hold the stomp boxes and have power supplies built in to them, and
are the way to go. If you don't have one of those cases, it's easy
to break the wires on the A/C adapters.
I've owned Ibanez, Boss, and MXR boxes. All had good points - could
you get your son to try them out and pick a couple without giving away
the surprise?
If you are forced to choose without his input, my picks for the first
3 would be:
Distortion/Overdrive (something with more than one sound - ie: a grunge
pedal would be rather limiting.)
Compresser/Sustainer
Digital Delay (should also be able to do chorus and flange effects)
Have fun!

| Slight nit - your average ddl pedal (as opposed to the a rack mounted
DDL, ala SDE1000) won't do flange/chorus or ?? cuz there is no
modulation control.
EQ, DDL, Chorus, etc... Good ideas!

| My first two picks would be a distortion/overdrive and a chorus. The
third is a tough pick (for myself, its a volume/wah, but your son
would probably think otherwise).
As far as brands, if you stick with Boss or DOD, you'll probably do
fine. Also, the Ibanez sound tank series appears to offer excellent
performance for the price: the TS-5 tube screamer overdrive is
particularly noteworthy (pun intended).
Ditto on the AC adapter recommendation.

I'd second the Boss recommendation. Their pedals aren't the cheapest,
but they are solidly built and there are cases designed to hold them.
One in particular hold three pedals and has a handy cover and handle to
carry them in.

| I've heard good things about the American Metal pedal; seems to be a
popular basic cruncher and a good choice for a young player in their
first band.
Given a choice between flange and chorus, I'd probably opt for a
flanger. I find it a little more subtle and useful, but this is
a matter of taste.
The pair in -1 seem near ideal.

| I'd suggest you take him down to the local music store and let himw try
a few. See what he likes,or at least have an idea before you buy.A lot
of effects just end up in a box in the closet, or sold to the second
hand store for pennies.Speaking of second hand music stores....try one!
You can probably pick up used effects for half the price of new in mint
shape.

what's he got for an amp ??
he may not need anymore distortion than what the amps
providing...
Pedals: There's only TWO musts, (given the amps distortion is
sufficent.) 1. Delay 2. Chours
IMHO..
Also, if you think about what you'd spend on pedals, you may
also wanna check out a multi effect rack unit instead of
pedals.. btw.. most of this is personal preference,, so it's hard for
me to really nail down options with what I know about your sons
situation..
