| | | Whilst attending a number of concerts I have noticed guitarists playing into
| and amp/effects rack where the rack has a sort of red light swinging to and
| fro through a wide arc.
   Sure sounds like a Korg DT-1 rack-mount tuner ...

I've seen these at various club gigs and my take on it is, it swings back
and forth waiting for you to play a note, then it will pin itself in the
middle if the note is in tune, otherwise it will be to the right or left if
it's out. It must have a pretty good response time if it's meant to work
in 'real-time'.

| | I always wanted one of those 'cause I think they look like a
CYLON eye. 8-) (Remember Battlestar Galactica?)

Yep - the cylon effect is in fact a Korg DT1 Pro Tuner (Or the new
DTR-1 ProTuner). Simply the coolest as far as tuners go (and in my
    humble opinion).

I was extremely content with my DT-1 Pro for at least three years.
What a great tuner! I sold it (via Notes) when the DTR-1 ProTuner
replaced it. It is a very visible tuner onstage and has a large
LED display for the note played as well as larger, brighter LEDS for
    the actual meter.
It tunes well in any mode, but the strobe mode is really a lightshow
and works quite well once you get used to it.

| | I wanted one of those, but at the time, they were way too much money
for "just" a tuner. So I got the Sabine verson for lots less. Now
that the DTR-2 is out and in the price range of the Sabine,..... hmmmm
(if nuthin' more than gettin' the free light show...)

| | SO how do you use these things? Like a normal electronic tuner but that
you can stand 20 feet away? Or does it somehow manage to work out
whether something's out of tune whilst you're actually playing?

When you're not playing or when you're playing anything other than
single notes, the display is entertaining but not useful.

| | Yes, you plug your guit in to the front, and there are output jacks
on the back (extra inputs too, for the whole band) that would go
    to your amp.

You CAN use it while playing; if you pause on one note long enough,
it'll tell you what note you're playing. Mine is "in-line" all the
    time.
