| | Oscar Schmidt is best known for making autoharps. They also import
guitars and sell these as a budget line. I've never actually played on
so I couldn't comment on the quality, but would expect it is like most
    minor-brand imported guitars.

I have an Oscar Schmidt Autoharp. I bought it used, although it's in
nice shape (can't remember when it was made, but it wasn't recent).
Very pretty grain on the back. I've seen the guitars, but never played
one. I think the guy in the shop said they were now made in Korea, but it
might vary (I think the original Oscar Schmidt company was based in
Chicago or thereabouts). BTW, if you think tuning a 12 string is a bear,
try an autoharp sometime, yikes! (hint, there's more strings than I have
fingers and toes to count em on).

| 2937.3 | Thanks for the help | CSLALL::CARDOZA |  | Tue May 31 1994 06:21 | 7 |
| | Thanks for the info. You are right about being made in Korea, this one
has a small "Made In Korea" sticker on the back of the head. It seems
to be constructed well, I guess time will tell, and the sound is good.
I'm sure it would sound better in the hands of a skilled player.

    Thanks Again,
    Joe

| | Again, this is a subject that is based solely on one persons opinion
against anothers, but if it sounds good to you, plays well and the
price is right, go for it.

I've played these guitars and have found them to be made fairly well
and they have a decent sound. (As mentioned, they are not Takamine
or Guilds, but in my opinion, I'd buy one of these before I'd ever
buy an Ovation! Not to bash Ovation, because I'm sure that alot of
people like them. They just don't sound right to me.)

Another guitar company that makes a nice acoustic guitar at a lower-
than-most price is Vantage. I've played several of these and found
them to be very nice instruments.

    Play what "works" for you......

| | Just saw an Oscar Schmidt acoustic bass guitar today in a shop. Single
cutwaway, bridge pickup, preamp, etc. The tag was marked $399.
