I have just bought a (second-hand) stick bass called "The Rail" and made
by Westone. Does anyone know this model? What do you think of it. Mine
sounds surprisingly good, considering it has almost no body. The top
two strings are of a thinner gauge than the others so I will replace
them.
The main attraction was of course portability. The main disadvantage so
far is the balance: the neck is too heavy and the bass hangs too
horizontal. Anyway I would welcome any comments or tips.
regards
John

The Rail was one of many attempts to jump onto the headless bass
bandwagon back in the early eighties. Of course, even Steinberger
isn't selling too many these days. The clones tended to have the look
but not the sound. I never saw a Rail in the flesh, only in ads, but
judging from other Westone basses I've tried, I wouldn't expect much of
it. As a beater bass, hey it's probbaly OK.
Oh yeah, the ability to move the pickup around (as an alternative to
having multiple pickups) is a cool idea, although not original (anyone
remember the Gibson Grabber?).
