| | I was in Sydney last summer (well, winter for them...). Definitely a
happening place for pubs, bars, and clubs. The music scene is great.
There is a local free newspaper similar to our own Boston Phoenix over
here in New England. The name escapes me, but I have a copy of it at
my house. If I remember, I'll check it tonight and post it here
tomorrow.
I didn't check out the prices of musical instruments while I was down
there, but I'd be willing to be that it's much more expensive there,
*especially* in Sydney. If they price guitars at the same ratio that
they price cars, forget it! Imagine paying $60,000 for a Honda Accord?

| | Hello
I live in Melbourne which is about 600 miles south of Sydney.
I have been to Sydney on many occasions and have seen some good bands
there. In most of the cities I have been to in Oz there is a magazine
called "BEAT" or something like that which lists all the gigs around.
Usaually there is an agency that helps muso's find bands as well.
    Good Luck
    P.K.

Sydney is the worlds pub rock capital !! (A slight exaggeration) - But,
having lived in San Fran, Miami and London, I can tell you the Pub rock
scene is at least as healthy as those cities.

Any night of the week you can find quality blues and rock bands
playing. However Thurs, Fri Sat & Sun (arvo), its a matter of making a
choice. Best Blues action is to be found in the Balmain, Roselle area
(Inner west Sydney) at Pubs like the Cat and the Fiddle, The Bridge, or
the Three Weeds (Rose Shamrock and Thistle). Also inner city pubs like
the Broadway (at Broadway) are worht checking out. Bands to keep an eye
    out for are :-

    The Hippos
    The Bondi Cigars
    The Foreday Riders
    The Mighty Reapers of Vengeance
    The Headhunters
    Mal Eastick
    Matt Taylor & Chain
    Smokestack Lightning
    Foreign Lee & the Legionnaires
    The Backsliders

This selection of blues bands really is the tip of the iceberg, but
I've seen 'em all heaps of times and can really recommend them. They
all cover classics, as well as do excellent originals.

I won't try to list all the "pub rock" bands out there, but there is
    plenty.

I suggest you pick up a copy of "On the Street" magazine (free at all
record & music stores every Wednesday) for a full listing of where and
when what bands are playing. OTS also lists bands that are auditioning
    etc.

The following should give you some idea of the comparitive cost of
    instruments here :-

New Gibson Les Paul standard - approx $1250 Aus
New Fender Strat (US) - $1100

Feel free to give me a call (at DEC Sydney) when you get here, and I'd
be happy to have a chat.

    Cheers,
    		Jeff.

Bad news Pat...Johnny Diesel and the injectors don't exist anymore.
Good news...he went solo and it's just plain old diesel.

BTW have you guys heard any of the Baby Animals stuff?? They were on
a tour supporting Van Halen. This band really cooks.

| 2535.8 | I hates crowded gigs ! | SNOC02::SHEARDJEFF |  | Thu Jun 11 1992 20:20 | 18 |
| | Yeah, I guess I should have included Baby Animals, Johnny Diesel, Nick
Barker & The Reptiles etc, But hey those bands are big acts now, and I
didn't really want to point Joycey to an act where he was gunna be
trampled by screaming teenyboppers. So, I stuck pretty much grassroots
Blues acts, where the punters are pretty laid back.

Incidentally, while Baby Animals and Nick Barker are definitely still
playing tough blues based pub rock, Diesel is a bit harder to catagorise
these days ! Have you heard his new "Hep Fidelity" Album ? It runs
the range from his pub rock/blues thru funk/soul/rap ! I love it ! Some
of the wah pedal guitar work is insane, and his vocals are stronger than
ever. It's great to see a young guy unafraid to really diversify.
For relatively unknown hard rock (ie still uncrowded gigs), I'd
recommend The Poor Boys and Judge Mercy. These guys are influenced by
AC/DC, Screaming Jets, Angels etc, and REALLY rip it up.

    Cheers,
    		Jeff.
