Conference napalm::guitar

    Adrien Belew performed on three albums with King Crimson (Discipline,
    Beat, and Three Of A Perfect Pair, all *excellent* albums IMVHO) and
    put out several solo albums after his stint with Zappa.  He also had a
    band called The Bears a couple of years ago, and is still putting out
    albums.  I don't think the last couple did very well, as he seemed to
    drop his trademark weirdness, seemingly trying to target a more
    mainstream market.

    Check out his solo album Lone Rhino for some of his most definitive
    work.

we should probably give Adrian his own note but. I highly recommend his latest
album which I think is called "Young Loins" which has the song pretty pink
rose on it (and that's actually probably the worst song on the album). I love
this guy he has his own style. Others might note that Adrian once played with
Zappa but I don't know if he is on any albums...great player. I also second
the recommendation for Lone Rino great album/song....

    Young Lions is a great album!  Weird that you should mention it, I'm
    listening to it *right now*.  I'd disagree that "Pretty Pink Rose" is
    the worst song on the album though, I like that one.
    
    I've loved that song "Heartbeat" which he redid on this album for
    years!  A wonderful song, probably my favorite of his.  It was
    originally on the King Crimson album "Beat".
    
    BTW, I highly recommend all three of the King Crimson albums Adrien
    played on.  They also have some wonderful playing by Robert Fripp. 
    Excellent songs and textural guitar work.  My favorite is "Discipline". 
    Keep in mind that the Fripp sound is more dominant on these then the
    Belew sound.

    Perfecto timing. I was just listening to the King Crimson album,
    Beat...twice even.
    Love the song Heartbeat. Should have gotten airplay. Of course none
    of his stuff gets airplay that I know of. I think he scares off the
    youngens. I also think Three of a Perfect Pair is my favorite so far 
    from CK. Excellent production, and even theough this is the wrong
    notes, Bill B. playes a tastefull set of percussion. 
    
    Who's Margaret Belew...wife, daughter? I've seen the name as
    receiving lyrical writing credits.

    Belew has played with Bowie (during the "Scary Monsters" years and also
    with the Talking Heads (during their 8-10 players, "Remain in Light"
    tour).

     As a sidenote, If you enjoyed the three Belew/Fripp Crimson albums,
    you'd probably like Fripp and Andy Summers (Police) "I Advance Masked".

Anyone else going to the Adrien Belew/Dave Alvin show tonight at the Paradise?
Should be interesting, Adrien is playing solo acoustic, and will be doing
solo, Bears, and King Crimson material....

Last night's show was really cool! Adrien played a bunch of material from the
new album he has coming out next spring, old solo stuff, Bears material, and
he threw in a couple King Crimson songs for good measure. Oh, and a couple
Beatle tunes as an encore.

But even better than the music was the format of the evening! It was very 
informal, with seats put down on the the dance floor of the Paradise. 
Adrien came out and played three songs, then stopped to take questions from
the audience. After taking a half-dozen question, he would then play 2-3 
more songs, ad infinitum.

Some of the questions were normal ("Where did you get the inspiration for
such-and-such song?), some of them off-the-wall and amusing ("What's the
most pompous statement Robert Fripp every made to you?"). All of the questions
were answered with charm and intelligence. He also took requests, and even
played a few sections of songs that were requested but he wasn't really 
prepared (or able) to play. (I say able, 'cause one song he said he can't
sing and play at the same time, but he gave it a valiant effort anyways!)

One of the partial songs he played was a new song that was going to be
on the new King Crimson album, which comes out this winter (followed by a
tour, with Fripp, Belew, Tony Levin, Jerry Marrota, and one other bass
stick player whom I forget). He had only written one verse and chorus so
far, but he played the work-in-progress. Wicked cool.

Another cool part of the evening - he has a new CD out just for this tour.
It was recorded in two days at his house, and is just him with his acoustic
guitar. There are only 2000 available, and only available at these shows.
As an extra bonus, he stayed after the show and signed each copy for anyone
who wanted an autograph!

Actually, he politely refused to answer that one.... (the only question he
didn't answer, which is probably why it stuck in my mind, besides the obvious 
entertainment value).

    I have a question -
    I heard a song by him that was interestingly titled and as I remember
    absolutely incredible. The title is something long like " on the sea in the
    stomach of a purple tuna fish". I'm proabably not even remotely close,
    but could someone tell me the correct title and what album it is on? Is
    this album available still, because I have yet to find it when I fondle
    thru cd's a stores.

I must say, that's a wonderful turn of phrase to describe how I feel when
the local bargain CD store has more stuff that I want then I can afford.

     I saw Belew in 198? with the Bears in a small club called the Nick
    here in Birmingham Al. Needless to say it was a great show, but the
    high-point of the evening was after the show Adrian (and the other
    Bears) hung around out front of the club for quite some time while
    several of us got autographs (on my Highland Music tee shirt) and just
    generally BS'ed. He was a really friendly and funny person; someone you
    would like even if he was'nt a well known artist. Even though we were
    hangin around like a bunch of groupies, he was cordial, humble and
    willing to talk with us at least until the gear was loaded. It gave me 
    respect for Adrian Belew as a person as well a an artist and just
    enhanced my appreciation for his music.
    
     Then, April '92, a couple-o-friends and I caught one of  the first
    stops of the Young Lions tour. WOOHHH!!! I was buzzin for days!! King
    Crimson material, Bears tunes, older solo stuff, new material- it was
    one of the most enjoyable concerts I've ever experienced. The man just
    exudes joy and happiness while he's on stage (I would too, if I could
    play guitar as well as he can).
    
     Is he currently touring? If so, could someone please post a schedule,
    I would'nt want to miss a nearby show.

    	He was a few months ago, he was doing an all acoustic show.
    I think he was selling a CD of the show also at the shows.
    Right now I think he is writing songs with Robert Fripp for the
    new version of King Crimson.

    Alan Starr acquired one of those acoustic CDs for me at the show he
    saw and I must say that it's great!   Not for sale in stores
    apparently.

    Wow, I'm amazed there isn't more written about Adrian Belew here. I
    just picked up his late 1995 release "Guitar As Orchestra".  It's
    Belew playing all guitars - but there are very few guitar sounds
    here.  He used ~3 Roland synth modules with his Custom Shop
    Stratocaster to record the album - done in his home !  Very cool.
    It sounds like 20th century classical music.  Some of it's pretty
    thick.  Nice background music 8>).
