| | OK... can't pull the wool over your eyes huh.

Fact: Fred is doing a side by side comparison between a Mesa Mk-IIc
    ---- with a EVM-12" against my Peavey MX with a EVM-12".

    Now, before the Boogie owners/followers start sending me hate mail like;
"gee Fred what are ya stupid"? Take a PV over a Mesa? hahahahahahahahahah
    "You can't tell the difference?"
    "WHAT ARE YOU DEAF"! and
"Go with the real amp Derfbrain"... etc.

Let me say that I think I have a one in a million Peavey (IMHO) and it will
take alot for me to get rid of it (at this point in the game)
especially after retubing it with those SOLVTEK 6L6GC's YA-HOO!!

Ahem... so I'm "playing around" with this Boogie Mk-IIc head and
I'm using the EVM-12 from my MX and I'm having a hard time getting
a good lead sound. It's lacking the "crunch" I get from my stickin'
P-word MX. I figure that if I can get that tone from a PV, gosh...
I have to be able to get as good AND better from a Boogie... right?

So... back to the BASENOTE... what are *your* favorite Boogie
settings for both Clean, semi-clean and lead crunch?

Enter now while the E-lines are open! ;)

| | Hey Fred, I just can't help but ask... If you're happy with your MX,
why do you keep auditioning other amps? You got a bad case of GTS
    lately or what?

I hear Boogies make a good crunch sound when striking concrete after
having been heaved from the roof of a several story building!

| | Fred, stay with the Peavey, If you played the other amp and didn't
decide to immediatly replace your P-word amp, then the difference
isn't dramatic enough to warrent trading. I think you'll give the
Boogie every opportunity to sound "better", just because......
Its a Boogie. Don't believe all the hype, some Boogies sound
incredible ( or so I'm told B*) ) and some are dogs. GTS is a
easy thing to get , but if you don't absolutly love the new amp,
more so than the Peavey, stay with the Peavey

|  |       Thanks for all the replies here and also for all those settings, [^}
but the deal here is that I went home, kicked my family out of my
basement, warmed up both the PV-MX and the Boogie and did a real
A/B comparison (insert sonic II earplugs here) ;). The Boogie had a
GREAT/KILLER clean tone (which was VERY warm and colorful. I fell in
love the first time I heard it! Then hit the A/B switch and went to
the MX... hmmmmm not bad either. OK... go to the lead/crunch/solo/
bizerk channel... hmmmmm... sounds good to me, hit A/B switch back
to the Boogie... hmmmmm I guess I need to play around more with the
tone controls :(. OK! Now I have a great tone on the Mesa that's ALOT
warmer than the MX! GREAT now go back to the cleaner channel on the
Boogie... hmmmm, alittle thin due to the bass being rolled off enough
so that I don't get this low end distortion. OK, a trade-off here with
the Mesa that I don't have to deal with on the MX.

What's a guy to do? Alot of things in life include trade-offs...
Thanks for all the replies. I would hold on to the MX regardless
of what else I bought (since it wouldn't bring much money on the
        market anyway). The quest continues...

Yo Greg, why am I looking around if I'm happy with my amp? I guess I,
like alot of people look for the "ultimate tone" from time to time and
that some folks (while happy with what they have) look for something
that's better. I believe we all have a "love/hate" relationship with
our equipment and with all the different things on the market some of
us are just plain curious. I didn't check Boogie's out just to have one
BTW, I thought/still think it may give me what I'm looking for, but I
haven't found that fineline yet. I don't jump at anything in life
(unless someone offered me a mint '66 Corvette for $2000.00 ;^) or if
Paul Abdul needed a date for Saturday night... fat chance) many MANY
    ;^)'s.

The quest continues... hey, I'll play until the cows come home
and maybe I'll find what I'm looking for... then again, maybe not, but
I have to admit that the field is narrowing down to a few choices.
Besides, I would be saving alot of money if I didn't buy anything!
Maybe I need a vacation more than an amp! Hmmmmmm... let me think
    about that too! ;^)

    				Rock on,
    					Fred

Sounds EXACTLY like the problem I had with my Kitty M3. I just

| | This is my greatest frustration with Boogies (and I think a lot of
others who've mentioned it in the past): Not enough separation between
clean and lead channel control. You can set it up to get a great rhythm
sound, then switch to lead and ... phhhhht. So you tweak up the lead,
and it really hums, then switch back to rhythm and .. you've lost it.
Being the only guitarist in my group, I switch back and forth
constantly, and I couldn't imagine the hassle of trying to set up to
get a good sound on both channels in an actual performing situation.

I know some others in hear use Boogies and swear by them. And I've
heard some of you, and I think you sound great. But I can't conceive
how you do it. I opted way back for an amp with completely independent
channels, and I couldn't live without it. If I had a Boogie, I'd have
    to have two amps.

    - Ram

P.S. - Don't you just love all of the help you're getting on Boogie
    settings, Fred?

| | re .-1
The Mark IV "fixes" some of that by giving separate gain and tone controls for
each channel (but, bass and mid are still shared between the clean (R1)
and crunch rhythm (R2) channels). See note 1853.
The main problem I've had in setting up my Mk IV is getting the clean channel
dirty enough ^}
I find the clean channel too clean, and the crunch rhythm
channel too dirty, if you use the "recommended" settings.
