| | The few I've tried, I reallyliked 'em too - naturally, they're very
Fender-ish. If I hadn't stumbled on such a good deal (and tone) on my
Laney combo, I would started looking for Musicman stuff ...

| | The deal on Music Man is that the preamps are transistor, the power
stages tube. When using the master volume to get overdrive, you're
getting mostly solid state distortion. You have to have the thing up
pretty loud to get the tubes to start humping.

They are a bargain on the market since they have the same
built-like-a-tank construction as Fenders at a lower price (due to less
brand recognition). Also, in comparison to older Fenders, many have
modern amenities like effects loops and channel switching.

The amps are no longer made, but the guitars and basses are still being
cranked out since Ernie Ball bought the company.

| | I thought that the 2 6l6's were the main power section and the little
     12x**? was for the preamp.

| | The 12x** which is probably a 12at7 or 12ax7 is a part of the
power tube section typically called a phase inverter tube or a driver
tube for the power tubes. Preamp sections color and increase gain in
    the amp.

| | Note that Musicman *did* make amps with tube pre-amps for a while
    too; the "HD" series maybe?

The tube power section in the Musicman still colors the sound,
even at low power levels; that's the idea. Think of a Tube
Screamer through a Twin; not too shabby. From what I've heard,
the solid pre-amp/tube power (a la Musicman) idea has generally
worked out better for getting the cranked Fender type of tone and
the tube pre-amp/solid power (MP-1, etc) idea has been better at
    getting gonzo, over-the-top distortion.

Hey, remember when Clapton was a big endorser of these?

| | A (not complete or direct) quote from "The Tube Amplifier Book",
    Volume Three;

"The early MusicMan amplifiers were tube amps entirely. You can
recognize the all-tube models easily, since the amplifier size
(i.e., 65 or 130 watts output) is written out in script on the
lower, right-hand corner of the amp (Sixty-five or One Hundred
    Thirty, for example)."

Secondly, at least half of the 12AX7 tube is used to run the reverb.

I, too, own a MusicMan 110 RD, which I've "upgraded" by adding a
JBL D110 musical instrument speaker. Ironically, just lately I've
been getting a bit tired of having to crank the amp up to get the
*best* tone the amp can deliver, so I've started using a really
old Rickenbacker amp. But, the MM amps are bullet-proof, so I'll
    probably hang onto mine.

My amp 110-rd HAS got fifty written in script on the lower
right hand corner. so is it or isn't it totally tubular ? I had
also read that the original Mesa Boogies were modified Fenders,
      hhhmmmmmmm....I wonder if...........

| | Folks,
I used to have the schematic for the opamp front end/tube output
Musicman amps. I forget the model, probably the two by twelve combo.
I guess it's somewhere buried in my "filing system". Interestingly enough, I
seem to remember it did not use a MOSFET opamp, so replacement with a TLO type
should sweeten the sound.

Leo did not start MusicMan but some long time Fender execs did. I forget
which. Somebody White I think. Leo help them develop their first
guitars and basses. I don't think he ever owned part of MusicMan.
G&L on the other hand WAS Leo's and George Fullerton. Anyway,
I agree with the general concensus on the amps, they are built
to Fender's preCBS standards. Like tanks. At least that's always
been my impression. Never actually been inside one.

that music-man's claim to amp fame?

According to the schematic in The Tube Amp Book, the MusicMan
HD212 150 is all SS except for the 4-6L6 power tubes.
     Betcha that amp is LOUD.

Saw an ad. for one of these yesterday (you don't get too many of them
around these parts!). Unfortunately, the owner neglected to specify
some of the more imprtant information...the asking price, for instance.
Still, judging by the phone number he's not too far away so I might
make an appointment to see it.

Anyone got any other comments about these amps? If it can give the sort
of retro '60s tube sound I like, then I might well be interested...
