| | You may have noticed some clean up going on in the past
week. There's a reason; Rick Marshall has graciously
appointed myself and Bill Buckley as moderators of this
conference. Neither Buck or I are really into heavy-handed
moderation, and we both have jobs to do, so I feel that
most conference moderation will be pretty much as it has
been: "hands off". However, we will strive to keep the
conference well organized and running smoothy. Also,
initially, Buck and I will be cleaning and consolidating
a lot of topics and discussions. For instance, there is
no reason to have 22 topics on "Brand X Amps" or "Brand
         Y Guitar".
Some of the rules we would like to state, and ask for our
         fellow guitar_noters help on are:
         1) Keep the chatter down to a minimum and in the proper
            topic (1954 - "General Discussion").
         2) Keep replies in line with the topic you reply to.
         3) Keep in mind the DEC Personnel P&P's and guidelines
             on noting and proper ettiquette.
         4) Please post ALL For Sale & Wanted: notes in Topic 2.*.
Also, please delete your "For Sale/Wanted" ad entry (entries)
             after the items are sold.
Buck and I are both open to suggestions and ideas and welcome
your comments and suggestions on the content/course of this
conference...After all, this conference is what we (all of us)
         make it.

I thought I would share it with all of you, so that we may have some
"food for thought" when noting...it can only keep out happy

                          **DIGITAL INTERNAL USE ONLY **
    ----------------------------------------------------------------------
Message from Ron Glover Corporate Personnel OCT 1990
    ----------------------------------------------------------------------

Over the last several months Digital has been contacted by a number of
individuals and business entities that were angry about negative
comments made about them in our Notesfiles and Conferences. As the
Personnel Policy Manager for Digital I have been the recipient of many
of those notes. I thought I should take the time to post this note to
inform employees that it is not appropriate for them to make negative
comments or references about any person or business entity in any of
Digital's employee interest notesfile or conferences.
There are several reasons why we are establishing this rule. The first
has to do with fundamental fairness. It is simply not fair for an
employee to make a negative comment about a business when we don't
provide those businesses an opportunity to respond and defend
themselves. This is particularly true given the fact that we have no
way of determining whether the comment is honest, fair or accurate.
Clearly Digital has no intention, or desire, to open up its notesfiles
to third-party businesses so that they can engage in a debate about
whether they provide quality services. The only logical solution then
is to ask our employees to refrain from using the Notesfiles to air
grievances they have with individuals, vendors, or organizations.
In addition to out concerns about fairness, we are concerned about the
potential damage that these kinds of comments may cause to third-party
businesses. In that regard, employees should understand that they may
be personally liable if the statements they make cause harm to any
person or business. Moreover, there is some possibility Digital may be
held liable for such comments as well. Stated more simply, comments
made in a Notesfile or conference are in no way privileged or immune
from claims of liable, slander or defamation.
We are asking all of the users of Notesfiles to exercise discretion and
judgement in the comments that they make in the system. We are also
asking moderators to go back and review the notesfiles they moderate
and to remove any notes that include derogatory references to
    third-party businesses.
Please feel free to contact your moderator if you have any questions on
    this subject.
    Ron Glover
    Corporate Personnel Policy Manager

think). I came in early this morning to fix it. I know that since

| 3.67 | KDX200 DECNET Address to change areas THIS WEEK! | KDX200::COOPER | Revolution calling! | Tue Jun 13 1995 11:24 | 16 |
| | Folks - KDX200 is MOVING from CXO1 to CXO3 musical machines... This will
require a DECNET address change - The name will be the same, just a
different address (8.719 is what it is now), it's moving to area 28
(28.mumble).
I hope to do this sometime this week; I'm trying to coordinate it so
we'll only be off the air for an hour or so, hopefully late Friday
afternoon (mountain time). I'll post the new DECNET address BEFORE I
move the machine, so everyone can find it. :-) Those of you who do
not have sufficient privs will need to pass the info along to someone
who does (send mail to system?), and ask them to update the decnet
database.
Stay tooned!

Don't panic, Coop! :-) Not everyone has figured out what happened yet.
There's already been an enquiry in MUSIC about what happened to KDX200
(don't worry, I answered it). It always seems to take a bit for a
conference to recover after a move.

A new sales tool designed to help you and Digital's Business Partners
sell the AlphaServer 4100 is available for ordering.

Titled, "Shattering the Barriers," this 7-minute video tape is
specifically designed to support the AlphaServer 4100 product
  announcement (code name: Rawhide).

The video features four engineers from Digital who have a rock band
called, "Rawhide." The director produced the video in "rockumentary"
style. Band members humorously explain why they wrote a song about the
AlphaServer 4100 and what it means to them. The video premiers the
  title song, "Shattering the Barriers."

Use it for customer events and kick-off meetings. And, consider using
it in conjunction with the "A Files" video tape and the "Alpha Story"
presentation--both are also available on the Information Repository.

  Ordering Information:

Order your copy through the Information Repository on-line service by
typing: VTX IR at the prompt. Search by Document number (VI568N),
  then select video.

Share this information with Partners. Let them know they can order it
for $6.10 using their VISA or Master Charge credit cards and by calling
Video Express at (617) 449-9431. Give them the VI Number and title for
  easy ordering.

                             *** Important!! ***

    Folks,

I've recently finished building a high performance cluster for my team
that I think would make a better host than my workstation (KDX200).
Actually, I was thinking I might have KDX200 boot from that cluster
    later ANYWAY...

Tonight, I'm going to move these notes conferences to it.

The reasons for this move are as follows:

    1. NAPALM is a high performance, two node VMS Cluster with redundant
members including HSC's, disk drives, and a high capacity tape drive.
It's configuration (for the propeller heads among you) includes two
VAX 6430 processors with 192mb of physical memory, redundant
intelligent disk controllers, SCSI buses, connection to dual-rail
ethernet, connection to a massive UPS system and PolyCenter Console
        Manager (PCM) system (with auto-paging).

The Result? These conferences will be available nearly 100% of the
time via these most righteous, high-zoot resources.

    2. There are six users on this cluster, most of whom are NT weenies
and use OpenVMS for file/print services only. :-) These machines
        are WAY-faster than KDX200 (a little VS3100).

The Result? Improved file access speed via load balanced and much
        faster processors/members.

    3. Reduntant XMI-based ethernet controllers.

The Result? Improved noting performance via load balancing and a
        (much) higher speed network adaptor.

    3. Blah-blah...Yada,yada,yada.

    So;

Sometime tonight, I'm going to shut down notes access to KDX200, and copy
the files over. These conferences include:

    COMMUSIC.NOTE
    COMMUSIC_V1.NOTE
    GUITAR.NOTE
    HEAVY_METAL.NOTE
    HERETIC.NOTE
    HOME_STUDIO.NOTE
    MUSCLECARS.NOTE
    MUSIC.NOTE
    MUSIC_MAKING.NOTE

When the move is complete, I'll create dummy conferences on KDX200 to
point folks to the new location.

What do YOU need to do??

Well, most of you know this, but I'll say it anyway:

To retain your unseen maps, go into NOTES and issue the following
    command:

    NOTES>modify entry entry_name/file=napalm::new-file-spec

    Example:

    NOTES>modify entry heavy_metal/file=napalm::heavy_metal.note

Please contact me with any questions or concerns,

    Thanks,
