When I saw the first issue it looked like reprints from GP rather
than new material. I take it you find this one otherwise?

I have picked up this issue myself and just like the first issue
I'm dissapointed again. Most of the stuff if not all of it is
reprinted articles. I really don't think we will see a good dedicated
bass player magazine unless we start it ourselves!

| | Hold everything! The new Bass Player has just came out. I think
they have the Notes conference over there at the publications
headquarters because someone must have heard my last comment! This
new one is alot better, any serious or not so serious bass player
should check this one out as soon as possible. Great Job this time
    around!

The third issue, uh, no the first issue, uh, no the *premiere* issue
of Bass Player is now out. It is officially a quarterly now, $3.95 on
the stand, subs are $12.95 "if you act now" (it says regular rate is
$17.95, that's more than the stand price!!!).

Monthly columns by Dave LaRue of Steve Morse's band on beginning
topics, Anthony Jackson on who knows what, Randy Jackson on "pop" bass,
the usual equipment and record reviews, etc. We need more bassists out
there, GP is twice as fat, a buck less per issue and comes out three
    times as often!!!

This month's cover is Billy Sheehan (who else), there's a Jack Bruce
transcription (good!!!) and yet *another* Jamerson article by Dr. Licks
(I surrender, I agree to buy yer book). Where's the upright players?
I think I'll wait a couple before plunking down for a sub....

Issue #2 is here (and it's an euipment special...sheesh, more stuff
    about whether or not I'm a dweeb because I don't have a 5 or 6 string
bass, etc). Saving grace is the Anthony Jackson interview concludes
with some more controversial ideas and a two-chorus solo of "Stella by
Starlight" from Bob Magnusson is transcribed and analyzed. Also a new
    Chuck Rainey column.

At least the only MIDI rack pukes in the ads are bassists 8^) 8^)
    8^)

Still waiting for the Rick Calcagni article....

| 1427.6 | From "Special Issue" to Quarterly to Bimonthly | AQUA::ROST | Stevie Ray Fretnoise | Wed Dec 12 1990 16:09 | 11 |
| | BP is now bimonthly. That might be good news...but they have started up
a column like the Mike Varney "Spotlight", just for bassists. Gimme a
    bucket...

There's more than lip service being paid to the upright so far, which
is good news, and the transcriptions lean more to jazz stuff than
two-handed tapping....but then again, a tapping feature is promised for
next issue. Man, skip it and let's have some Jerry Jemmott
    transcriptions.

Are they still doing "special issues" like some of the earlier
ones or is the mag more generic, with a little bit of everything.

    	I prefer the latter.

These many years later, I can say that I like Bass Player; I've
been buying it regularly since the issue with Flea on the
    cover. I figgered that I'd read it for awhile before subscribing;
looks like they'll get my sub as I'm sick of trying to find it
locally as it comes out at irregular intervals. Plus I hate the
kind of places one has to go to find it in the Springs....locals
will know what I mean :-).

I'd actually like to get some back issues. They used to list some
at $7 apiece (a li'l grease, please) but even that ad has the real
early ones marked as sold out. So, a question and a request...anybody
ever see any back issues anywhere? Got any you want to sell? How
much for ze leetle girl? If you, gentle reader, can answer "yes" to
any of these questions either now or in the future, I'd appreciate
    hearing from you.

I'm pretty sure I saw it in either McKenzie-White or B.Dalton up by
Chapel Hills Mall. You might check 'em.

| | Maybe Daltons. I tried McKenzey-White and it was a no-go. "We *used*
to carry it, I don't know what happened!". And with all the bass players
   in this town, too. :-)

thanks for the tip on Dalton....I've never tried there. McKenzie
White, never easy to get to in after-work traffic, is now officially
unaccesable with that new Walmart in the neighborhood. Anything
to avoid the place who's name, as someone once put it so well,
"would indicate that one was primarily employed in the music
business" :-). Of course, magazines are the one thing I've never
had to chase a salesbozo around to get a price on.....
