    FOr the satriani, his rhythm tone consists of single coil pickups what
    a highly compressed and EQed, with chorus, a slight short delay, and
    reverb.  A rockman Sustainor/Chor unit is a cheap, quick way to get
    this tone. 
    
    His lead tone is bascially the same effects.  He uses a high gain
    setting for sustain...He plays through a Chandler tube Overdrive into
    modified Marshall 100WT tops.  His Marshalls line out into the
    following effects...a wha-wha, a chorus, a delay unit, and harmonizer,
    and an aural exciter.  There is reverb added to his overall sound later
    on.  He plays through the wha-wha a lot...he uses it to phrase and
    as a variable tone boost.  I have aproximated this sound...to get
    it, you can plug your guitar into a graphic EQ pedal and push all
    the mid freq up to the top, as well as the level conrtol.  PLaug
    this into your and, and will give you sustain you need.  Add a chorus,
    delay, and a wha and you got it.

    I've got 80% of what you suggested, the EQ is something that's always
    tempted me but I've never brokend down a g You mentioned boosting
    the mid's that brought to mind a minor problem thats been bugging
    me i.e. I have a Peavy Classic Chorus 130 and an old Music Man (*TANK*)
    that pumps about a 100wts, anyway I'm picking up to much low end
    with the Peavy/Strat combo.... I guess the EQ would help remedy
    that huh? The other is that the P-amp comes with a "THICK" switch
    which helps create the Tube Amp sound; Nice try Peavy but not quite.
    I guess I'll keep trying different combo's...(there's a question
    in there somewhere) the 'ol mind wandered...

    Aint he great!! the guy flips me out... Hendrix woulda quit if

|  |     For the SRV tone...
    
    My understanding is that he uses (used?) Dumble amps.  He almost always
    plays exclusively the rhythm (neck) pickup on his Strats.  For Voodoo
    Chile, you *have* to have a wah-wah.  Boost the midrange a lot and cut
    back the highs a little.

    I was born and raised in the Dallas area, SRV's home town and have
    watched him develop into one spetacular musician. Of course he credits
    his brother for his success (Yes and no) I've seen 'em both and
    Stevie has definetly 'created' his own sound. I've caught SRV & DT
    several times...and the last time I saw him in July '88 after he
    recovered from his Drug problems ,exhaustion and fathers sudden
    death, he was excellent on stage. He looked like he was really enjoying
    himself, just stood up there, chewed his gum and played chords and
    lead at the same time (nothin' up my sleeves just watch my hands)
    can this guy jamm or what?!?!? Totally blows me away every time!
    
    As far as Amps go....Peavey!! exclusivly (with a big "DONT MESS
    WITH TEXAS" sticker on it. The WAh is a given but this brings up
    another question: 
         Whats the difference and PROS/CONS on the pedal wahs vs a T-wah?
         Who uses a 'T' type these days? Sometimes I think I hear it
         in some Clapton tunes?!? Also I bought a DOD FX80B compressor/
         sustainer can someone help me 'balance' this thing as far as
         it's functions i.e. attack vs. compression? Fooling around
         with it I've basically figured out how to get it to scream
         go the other way with it to sustain but you bump one string
         and you've screwed up your 'sound'. A real Bi**ch when the
         tapes rolling :-(

    p.s. Still no input on Vodoo chile, the song!? Play it by ear? I'm
    trying! I'm sure sheet music won't do it justice. Does anyone know

    As far as input on Vodo Chile..
    
    Do what I've been doing for the last 20 years.
    
    Just beat it to death, listen, play, listen , play, listen more,
    play along... etc... frustrating ?  You bet, but eventually you'll get 
    it.   Don't need sheet music, just an ear and patience.
    
    It's how I do all my major copying..  Just drill it till it's second
    nature.

    If you have Vodo Chile on CD, you can set your CD player to repeat
    5-10 seconds (or whatever) of the song.  Once you learn that part, skip
    to the next 5-10 seconds, and so on.  
    
    Then you can repeat 30 second or 1 minute sections and put the song
    together.  Mucho easier than cassette or lp.

    following version of this chord is more common:
    
    6th fret

   e ||---------|---------|---------|-----
    
    It's useful for a lot of things anyway, so it's worth knowing the

|  |     Yup, that's the same chord, just up 7 frets.  The problem with using
    that, is that you've got all sorts of stuff happening down with
    the open e, bending the g, then E on the d, with a quick tempo,
    it's hard(er) to race back up the neck as opposed to staying in
    the general vicinity.
