There's a kin to fuzz, the fretless "buzz basses" that enhance
the slapping sound of the string as it vibrates or whatever...

There's one bass player, Billy Shehan (DLR, Tallis) who uses
a high gain distortion sound with his bass. I recall his "trick"
a few years back was to get the "singing harmonic" sound from his
bass - something that until then was relegated to the lead guitarist.
My friends would call him "The bass player that does leads"...

Yeh, I play around with effects on my rigs, but I don't use it a
lot. I find a wha pedal gives some licks an interesting funky kind
of sound. You really don't have to move the pedal with your foot
to much, just set it and leave it.

With the Fuzz, I fixed the open string problem by slipping a very small
set of sponges under the strings at the bridge. This dampens them
just enough to allow the string to vibrate, but not forever. This also
give my bass a upright string bass sound when I don't have the
    distortion on.

| | In the Craig Anderton book 'Electronic Projects for Musicians' (or
something very close to that name), he has a Bass Guitar Fuzz tone
circuit. I remember it having some different filter settings & some
comments on why you needed a different design for Bass Guitar. I've
never built it, but you might want to hunt down the book & read up
on what he did & some of his comments.

I used the sound alot back in the early 70's when
Sly and The Family Stone were big, I wasn't much of a player then
but, that was the sound for songs like Dance To The Music, Sex
    Machine, and M'lady.

| | Miroslav Vitous also did some interesting fuzz bass stuff on Weather
Report's first two albums (_Weather Report_ and _I Sing The Body
Electic_), including some with fuzz on upright bass.

| | Ah, Fuzz Face, the mere name brings back such memories, although
one memory it doesn't bring back is what it looked like.

Is it the round, shallow dome shaped object - whoever made that
unit also made a rather natty tremolo pedal, too....

    For Yourself"? I'm just interested...

| | I use a standard AC Morley Pedal (Wah, Fuzz, Volume). I seems to
work just fine. I am not sure why you need a special set of filters
    for the lower octaves?
