| 835.1 | Is Heads Up Boutique still in business ?? | ANT::JACQUES |  | Mon Sep 12 1988 10:52 | 14 |
| | There used to be a place in Southern NH called "Heads Up Botique".
A lot of musicians used to shop there for stage clothes. It all
depends on what type of look you are after. I think the days of
everyone wearing the same outfit are passe, even for GB. Granted,
you are expected to look presentable regardless what type of gig
    you are playing.

A lot of people I know where black Rebox sneakers when they play out,
because they look like shoes, and are comfortable.

    To each, their own.

Heads Up is in Lawrence MA, and is pretty easy to find, from what
I can remember. Haven't been there in a while but they sell spandex
    everything.

| | A nice shirt, Slacks and a tie are usually all that you need to look
reasonable for many gigs. Occasionally I like loud and obnoxious
hawaiian shirts, but not at a wedding. I play mostly covers & mostly
private parties. I try to avoid lounges (they don't pay as well & are
    usually not as much fun).

Nice shirt and a tie might work out there, but, hey this is
Beantown :^)! LA fashions a year later.

No really. Heads Up used to be very progressive, but they've
had the same leopard and tiger print spandax for three years.
Unless you're looking for a psuedo heavy metal look, it'll probably
be dissapointing. One caveat: On their discount/close out rack,
you can often find interesting stuff real cheap. I picked up
a silk jacket there for $20 that's been great.

Since I know Dan, I can guess what he's looking for. Go to
Merry Go Round, His Place, Chess King type places at your local
mall. They can get you into the mod, sophisticated look at reasonable
    prices.

While you might scoff at leather, a good pair of leather slacks,
properly fitted, will look great and wear forever. Any leather
    shop can do you well.
By the way, stage clothes are tax deductions. Remember, buy
    for comfort and wear!

Heads Up, by the way, is on Broadway in Lawrence, Mass. Another
place that deals in the same type of clothes is the Fame Conservatory
of Music in Worcester. Stairway to Heaven (one in Downtown Crossing,
one across from Fenway Park), a poster/pinup/t-shirt chain that caters
to the rock crowd occasionally has a few of the splashy clothes.
    There's a very wild leather/S&M (!) shop called Hubba-Bubba who can do
customized leather things (located between Harvard and Central squares
in Cambridge on Mass Ave). Also has a good collection of ear, neck
    and nose stuff.

| | I think that anything really origional is good on stage. In this
band i know, the guitar player went to the Ramses exhibit in some
science museum. They had a gift shop and he bought a yellow and
black egyptian print shirt. Also the bass player went to a square
dance clothing store and bought a really origonal shirt. If you
go and buy weird and origional clothes it looks good on stage. At
least that is my opinion. :^)

| | Allston Beat on Newbury St in Boston (just a block down from EU
on the same side o teh street) has some really cool clothes.
The lastest fashions in black would be a good description. They
have really wild styles. Not recommended for those who worry about
'what people will think' (if you get my drift).

For leather stuff, I recommend Snyder Leather for metza-metz leather
stuff (limited to black, of course), Wilson's for less-than-admirable
leather stuff, and Vanson's Leathers for those who take their leather
clothes seriously. Vanson's is the best, but for the $$$, Synder's
is the best bet for the $$$, Wilson's if you're cheap and don't
    care either way.

For the more dressy look, go to the Pheasant lane mall in Naseau
NH...they have some stores in there that are very contemporary in
    style (and not too $$$).

| | Always seems strange to me that so many bands dress in black...

Get out on stage and fade into the backline ( or the backdrops of 90%
of venues ) ? Is it to show off the make-you-puke coloured guitars ?
or are they all overweight ? or shy ? or what ???

Bright is best ; and they might be able to see you further back
    than the second row too...

| | I'm a firm believer that originality in dress is almost as important
as the song itself, the two go together. Most artist have there
own look which turns out to be a trend type thing for the kids,
example, the Metal look, Madonna, Michael Jackson, Prince, U2,
Phil Collins, Cindy Louper, etc. Find clothes for bands many times
I've found the best places to look are the thrift shops, and come
up with your own idea. I found a 1940 over size suit (the Clark
Kent look) for about $15.00, in real good condition. I 've found
the old short Army jackets dyed them black and they look good.
A nice Marine jacket, pad the shoulders, add some pins or jewelry
any thing that shines with a nice pauir of baggies and that works.
The female lead singer in or band, went out and bought
a band marching jacket, kept a small tail, added real big pads
on the shoulders, and where's it with a black leather mini skirt, (deadly).
For the more conservative look places like Casual Male, The Merry
Go Round, Tellos, and Chess King are usually pretty good, and priced
    right.

| | I always liked the make-you-puke shirts. I make it a point to rifle
through dept. store fabric counters for the ugliest, loudest bolts of
paisley/mandala material, buy 2-3 yards + a pattern and go home and bang
it out myself, because you'll never find a shirt that ugly in a store...

For Real Cool clothes, check out Shaky Jakes Vagabond Emporium, on
Highland Ave in Worcester, right in back of WPI, near the boynton
restaurant. Old 40's-50's sport jackets, Varsity jackets, Army digs,
and a wide-wide selection of vintage 60's collared shirts. Most
everything in there is under $10.00, too.

quite well. Imagine our friend George standing in front of 8 Marshall
stacks, reared back in a pose, fixin' to rip off a nasty solo and
    his red shirt simply sez:

"BALLS" on it. Very cool. Very appropeau.

Les, one good place for custom stuff on T-shirts is your local
personal computer.... yup, most of them support packages that print
custom graphics onto transfers which are in turn transfered onto
shirts, petticoats, etc. A frind of mine uses his to take pictures
of the boats owned by the yuppies that visit his seashore paradise
each summer, and then sells them to the yuppies....

Imagine it... Each member of the band with a graphic of the
band playing in the gig they are curently playing in, each member
of the audience with a shirt graphic of that night's audience...
help .... I'm losing it..... ahhhhh
