| That would be more consistent with my experience with him.
I've seen him twice. The first time was at the old Headliners
in Nashua. He was too drunk to play. The band tried to cover
up for him, but it was really awful. I asked for my money back
and got it. I have to confess though that the "warmup band" was
worth the price of admission: Jon Butcher Axis, who I wasn't familiar
with at the time. (Hey Dave V., does Derek remember this one?)

| When I was in school in Baltimore in the 60's I went to see Roy
in "that small lounge" in DC. At the time he was being touted locally
as a home-grown version of Jimi Hendrix. It was before he became
known nationally. He was playing with a C&W group of young locals.
Frankly, I was disappointed by his style and the overall quality
of the music, but perhaps I had unreasonable expectations.
In any case, I'm very sorry to hear of his demise. It's sad that
so many talented musicians get frustrated and run themselves into
the ground.

| I also heard that he hung himself, this was on the Public Radio
Network this morning. He did put out some great music. I listen
to Loading Zone quite often. It's too bad he is gone.

| I remember seeing him play 'Sweet Dream' on UK TV in about '73.
I bought the record but thats about the only time I ever heard or
saw hime here in the UK.

| Roy had some fairly recent releases on the Alligator Label. I believe
one of them was called "Hot Wires". There was also a write-up on
him a few months back in GP. It is always sad when a player is gone,
never to be heard from again.

Nope, I was in Nam. The band that opened up for them though had a lead
guitar player, "Terry McCarthy" whom was the lead player in the last
band that I played with. We plan on regrouping as soon as I can
transfer to ASO which I am owrking on now...Looks like I will be
heading up there in the next week or so. to Meet with personnel to
look for a job...
Lewiston is my home town, born and raised...and I plan on landing
there in the near future, (I hope)

| Check out the album Second Helping (I think that is what it is called).
I think if you listen to this you will see why Beck dedicated "CAUSE WE
ENDED AS LOVERS" to Roy. It has some scorching blues rifs and he makes
the guitar CRY.

| Anyone read the article on Roy in the latest Guitar World (September)?
Sounds like there is quite a controversy going on in his hometown.
Here's the scenario:
- Friends & Relatives are divided on whether Roy could've actually
committed suicide. Some say he wasn't capable. Others say he hit
the bottle pretty hard the last few years and wierded out. That same
camp said he was very troubled spiritually (because of coming from a
background where his father was a minister) and as a result became
very moody.
- Police report says he died of a crushed larnyx (sp?) from hanging
himself with a shirt in his cell. All the inmates in the jail said
because of Roy's size (6 feet tall, 220 lbs.) and the small size in the
actual cells, it would be impossible to hang himself. Supposedly,
the bar the police said he used, would result in Roy's knees touching
the floor. Inmates also claim that the police in that area are known
to get very physical with those they arrest and have the choke hold
down to perfection.
- Saddest part of all is the situation Roy's widow is in. She's 47 and
has to go out to look for a job. Insurance doesn't cover suicides
and she only has to mid-August (17th) to appeal the police report's
cause of death (due to the statue of limitations in that area). She
has no resources to fight it either.
Trivia: the article reported that the Stones offered him the lead guitarist
role before giving it to Ron Wood. Roy turned them down. What might
have been...

An old note, but....
I saw Roy twice, and both times he was great! His little 2-10? Fender
combo was placed on a chair, facing away from the crowd with a
microphone stuck in the back.
Roy walked out carrying his Tele and proceeded to make that guitar cry.
He did it all: rock, jazz, blues, and cw. Somebody mentioned "The
Messiah Will Come Again." Well, hearing that live *was* a religious
experience. Cute tunes like "Hey Hey, Good Lookin" were great chord
demonstrations, too.
You want to talk about tone? What that man could do with that Tele and
his hands was amazing. *Nobody* sounded like Roy, either. He owned
that tone. SRV would have loved this guy.
I think I'll yank out the Snake Stretchers album tonight and give Roy
another spin.

I'm looking for a specific Roy Buchanan album - apparently Marc Bolan
(the same guy from T. Rex?) collaborated on this one. A friend of mine
loaned a poor cassette copy to me and I like the album enough to buy
it, if I can find it on CD. Any clues would be greatly appreciated...

I just picked up the Roy Buchanan box set: "Sweet Dreams: The
Anthology" and scanned through the booklet. No reference (on the first
pass, anyway) to Marc Bolan (but then, that was just a hand written
note on a cassette somebody recorded at home). Guess I'm just gonna
have to listen to the whole thing...maybe a couple of times...

| There is some interesting stuff on that two cd set. Notably the last
cut in which they just start the tape rolling and roy does some off
the cuff solo stuff.
Charlie Daniels fans might be interested to know he did the vocals
on Roy's first un-released recording, some tunes which appear on this
anthology.
Lots of other classic stuff from his other released albums, including
"Messiah" and others.

| Can someone tell me what kind of style RB actually plays--Chicago style
blues,country....?? I've just read this conference on him and he sounds
pretty amazing. I've also been seeing his GUITAR ON FIRE CD in the
bargin bins and was wondering.....

| Roy's biggest influences were Blues, and early Rock. He used to cover
at least one Jimi Hendrix tune at every show. He used to do a tune
called "The Messiah Will Come Again" which featured some of the
fastest guitar playing I've heard.
Roy had a knack for getting some incredibly unique tones from his
Telecasters. He could make the guitar sound like it was literally
crying. He also was great at playing pedal-steel licks convincingly.
The Hellecasters played a tribute to Roy on their first album which
was very authentic.
Definately worth checking him out.
