Just a thought and I haven't tried this so....
Have you taken into account that Oracle doesn't write to the first
64k of a file? The person at Oracle I spoke to said they;d had sucess
using a seek of 128, assuming the default 512 block size.
Hope it helps,
Helen.

| 1539.2 | Yes, Oracle says it's a DRD issue | GUIDUK::SOMER | Turgan Somer - SEO06 - DTN 548-6439 | Wed Apr 02 1997 17:15 | 8 |

Funny, you should mention this. We just found out from Oracle that
    we have to use

    "dd ..skip=64k..."

But, according to Oracle it's Digital drd peculiarity, not an Oracle
    issue.

Oracle Enterprise backup (obackup) is a lot easier to use than dd. Cost
may be an issue but I know of at least two TruCluster customers using
it in the UK without problems.

| 1539.4 | EBU + DMO +NSR ?????? | ZPOVC::CSNAQS |  | Fri Apr 04 1997 02:49 | 11 |
| | Hi,
I thought EBU does not know how to backup OPS now, and there is no
way to use DMO & NSR to do an online OPS backup. Oracle was telling me
that if you want to use EBU, you must shutdown the other instances
first. So, I am very curious as how the 2 Trucluster customers in UK do
    their backups.

    Regards.

Correct - they shut down to one instance (exclusive) before backup.

| | I'm on a customer site right now (Hi mark - your name is in their
    docs:-)

The Oracle consultant here has recomended against the oracle tools and
to stick with dd for the raw partitions.

Is there an "official" Oracle statement on this?

| | Hi Jc,

It's really amazing because I have an Oracle consultant down here
    Brazil saying exactly the opposite.

We are selling a NSR + DMO + EBU solution to an OPS/TCR Production Server
    environment based on that.

I think that database aware backup would be always better (more secure)
    and easier to implement.

Jc, Have the Oracle consultant explained to you the reasons he not
recomends this kind of backup solution ?

Anyone could help us in order to have an official position from Oracle?

| | (sorry for the delay - I don't read this conference too often)

The Oracle guy here said that the tools are not yet robust enough for
him to recommend then into a 24x7 operation.

Turns out that this site will not go OPS yet, so there is no issue here
    today.
