| | Hi Jk,

This was my favorite game for the 64 before I got my amiga. I picked
it up at SYSTEM EYES last week as soon as I saw it. I have 688 on my
DECstation at work and enjoy Red Storm Rising much more. It's had a
    much longer shelf live.

On the c64 version, the map is located on the middle two pages on the
manual. The amiga version mentions a map in the bill of materials but
there wasn't one in my package either. I'll be glad to look up the
locations in my c64 manual and add another reply. In general, north is
more or less towards the top right corner of the strategic transfer map
screen. Tronheim is in Norway but I don't remember what part of the
coast. Podgarny penusula is the northern part of the USSR that borders
Norway. When you reach the correct area the program switches to the
pre-command menu and one of the options is to launch you Tomahawk (land
attach version). That's all there is to that mission except getting
back out. The missiles are pre-targeted so they require no input from
    you.

I tried to call Microprose about the map but never got through. If I
ever do I'll let you know

| | Thanks Rob,

    I was wondering if I was expected to buy an Atlas with the game! ;-}
I think that RSR could be a better game, if it had the computer imaging
feature of the bottom from 688. I enjoyed playing around in the
ditches to dodge torps and to ambush the subs.

Maybe I'll take it back to my dealer and let them call MicroPose about
it. Someone who E-mailed me from Usenet told me that their Amiga
version *DID* come with a map.

Oh well.. I still enjoy the game. In a way, it makes it more
realistic, since I REALLY have to find the enemy.

    Thanks for the reply.

| | JK,

I forgot that I gave my old c64 and its software to my brother. Now I
don't have a map either. I'll see if I can't locate a map in the
    library upstairs.

I agree there are some things in RSR that could have been better. I've
been disappointed in microprose since I got my amiga. They really
pushed the C64 to produce some great games. On the amiga, they seem
satisfied with porting from the IBM. They are not on the cutting edge
in their use of sound or graphics. On the other had, their games still
are very playable and well designed. If they would make the investment
in the amiga (in time and talent) they did on the c64 they could
produce great stuff. They are getting better. RSR is better that
Gunship which is better than Silent Service.

| | Amiga = C64 for Microprose ???

I was disappointed with Gunship on the Amiga, I knew the RSR on the
C64, but how about the RSR on the Amiga? pure conversion or more
scenarios, more depth on strategies, better graphics?.. I am hesitating
about the acquisition of the RSR.
Any idea about the availability of Silent Service II on Amiga?

| 3962.6 | Hoping Microprose gets better on the amiga | PULSAR::MARKS |  | Thu Aug 09 1990 10:52 | 10 |
| | This is pretty much a conversion. It plays faster than the c64 version
and the soviets seem better (ie I never had any trouble on the c64
avoiding helos and their sonar buoys, not true now). The graphics are
pretty much the same for the control screens; the animated sequences
are better but nothing to write home about.

If I still had my C64 I wouldn't think it was worth getting this game.
But in the two weeks I've had it I havn't played anything else.
