Guess you shouldn't have said anything huh? (re .1), but since you did
here goes. System Eyes in GREYSTONE PLAZA (Nashua NH) is a well
stocked store and the sales people are VERY knowlegable and helpful.
The prices are about average, but when you're a member you'll get 15%
off the cost of software and with the titles you mentioned that'll add
    up. Hope it helps.

| | re .0, .1

Dec isn't in the desktop publishing or animation business, so the
employees agreement doesn't apply, in my opinion. At any rate, that's
between the employee and his manager and no one else.

However, using a notes file to obtain info on buying equipment for a
private business is definately prohibited and I don't think there is
any question that this note should be hidden.

    My 2 cents worth.

.1 has been removed - no need to burn anyones buns...I was just
curious since my personnel people claimed that any/all computer
business is in direct competition with DEC when I consulted them
over a similar issue...I am staring to wonder if this is just their
interpretation and may now pursue the matter further...

I was genuinely curious...but agree that this is the wrong forum
to ask such questions - apologies enclosed

Rather than go through the usual list of opinions and "I heards",
I think it is always best to go right to the Orange Book, now
available online via VTX. I believe its says a "consulting" business
is ok, selling hardware products or software products, no.

    Dennis (who was curious, too).

| | I think it really depends on what you are doing (ie. are you working on
an AmigaVMS-type shell, a VTxxx terminal emulator, etal.) The
consulting option looks like it works to develop but every case has to
    get an ok.

Incidentlally, I am/was writing an Adventure type game to attempt to
market and when I started getting justification down called legal (name
was given to me by my PSA) and he said "recreational software?
adventure game?...no probelm its yours." Your milegae may vary
depending on if they can link the work to DEC otr your job but it
    is possible it would seem.

| 3505.7 | Pro Draw also ?? | SALEM::LEIMBERGER |  | Thu Feb 22 1990 04:00 | 6 |
| | If one wishes to do DTP work on the Amiga I suggest that Professional
Draw be added to the list of must have software. As far as video
goes the Amiga is the only piece I could afford. Looked at a VCR
yesterday, and the cheapest I could find that I felt could do the
job was 1600.00 on sale. Of course you may need 2 so.....

| | Youll probably also need a scanner at some point...if you dont already
    own one...

I believe Gold Disk also market a cannon scanner which they claim
is best suited for ProPage ProDraw - but its only B/w - you
could probably find cheaper and better alternatives - I have a wee
Datel handiscan but it wouldnt be suitable for business purposes...

I've never seen any statement anywhere that using a notesfile to buy
equipment for a private business (or any other legal or moral purpose)
is prohibited.

See OrangeBook, section 6.54 (Proper Use of Digital Computers,
Systems and Networks). The sub-head "definitions" defines improper
use as including "compete with the Company's business activities".
Thus, if offering hardware or software products is considered
"competing" (as was claimed by a previous reply) then use of Digital's
network for this purpose is improper.

It sounds like you and I are in agreement: there is no policy against
using the network to buy hardware or software for a private business
(or any other legal or moral purpose). (I classify breaking your
employee agreement and competing with DEC as being at least one of
illegal or immoral.) Note .3, which brought up the question, stated
the opinion that the author wasn't competing, but there was a general
policy against buying equipment that would be used in a business
though a notesfile. There is no such policy that I know of.
As to whether the author of the base note is competing with DEC,
that is between him and his management. Some management chains
define competition as anything computer related (having a typing
business that uses intelligent typewriters is competition).
Other define it as directly competing against DEC by offering
hardware, software, or a service that is offered by DEC. Thus,
selling a C compiler for VAXs is competing; selling a game for pcs
isn't.
