| 3067.1 | No need for switching. | LINCON::MGAINES |  | Thu Nov 02 1989 09:48 | 8 |
|  |     I have the 512k upgrade memory on my A500 for a total of 1 MEG.
    There is not a need for any type of switching. Install the upgrade
    and take off. The extra memory will allow many games currently being
    sold to usually have better graphics and sound. Most games are written
    to support 512k users, if you have the full 1meg your games are usually
    better.

    For the cheapest ram expansions, look in mags for mail order companies.
    The cheapest I think i've seen one yet is 75 or maybe even 70
    (Excluding clock). You can also buy unpopulated boards, Datel
    electronics offer such a board, and will quote you the current price
    for the ram chips.

| 3067.3 | how to buy ram | MILKWY::JANZEN | cf. ANT::CIRCUITS,ANT::UWAVES | Thu Nov 02 1989 11:48 | 12 |
| | You should first get the internal a501 ram to 1Meg.
    Then if you want to expand outside, buy an unpopulated ram box such as
    starboard II 500. Then you will need the ram chips. (You need to get
    the starboard first so that you can find out if it takes 41256 or
    1megabit chips; there is an add-on for 1-megs that may be included when
    you buy your starboard). Then buy the memories. Buy a big computer
    magazine such as computer shopper and go through looking for cheap
    rams; actually call up each company for quotes . DO NOT do what my
    brother did and send away a check for the price given in the magazine.
    Actaully call the vendor for the current price. The last price I saw
    was $3.16/ 256K bit ram. It may be lower now.

| | Some older games such as ARCHON will go a little funny when you have
    the expansion memory in. Since the game boots directly and the disk is
    not DOS format, you cannot run NoFastMem to turn it off. Other
    utilities such as Graphicraft will also fail when this memory is
    installed, but you can use NoFastMem to turn it off first before
    running it.

| | I bought my A500 with the extra .5 Mb installed from Gordon Harwood
    computers in Derbyshire. If you get Amiga User international, there
    are always ads in there for all manner of hardware & software.

    I have had no problems with it, whats more you get the real time
    clock thrown in, which can be used to set up the system time on
    boot.
