    I am looking at purchasing an Amiga, unfortunatly, I dont know
    very much about them.  I want to be able to do a reasonable amount
    of programming in both C and Lisp, and I'd like color.  I would
    also like a 20+ meg hard drive.  Would someone explain the differences
    betweeen the Amiga 500, 1000, 2500, etc, and maybe recomend one
    for me?
    
    Also, any idea how much something like what I'm looking for will
    run?

	As far as languages are concerned, Aztec-C from Manx seems to be
	the more popular of the two currently available C compilers; I've
	been using it for about a year now, and I'm reasonably well pleased.
	Check out some of the other notes in this file for further opinions.

	With regard to Lisp, you probably want to stay away from
	the Commodore/Metacomco Cambridge Lisp altogether.  It was
	described recently on USENET as: "...resembling a graduate
	programming class project...an embarassment to the programmers
	who worked on it..."  According to the reviewer, the "new"
	version (Lisp 1.3) is in fact worse than the old one.  On top
	of all that, it's a VERY non-standard dialect and it also has
	essestially NO interface to the Amiga system routines.

	There is, however, a PD item called XLISP which might suit your
	needs if you're just playing around; it's interpreted only (not
	compiled), so it's SLOW.  But it has the advantage of being free,
	fairly well-supported, and kind-of Common Lisp-like.  It's available
	on PeopleLink and other BBS's.

    Thanks, also, does anyone know what the differences between the
    different Amiga's are?  (the 500, 1000 and 2000, though I gather
    the 2000 isnt out yet?)
