| | Just a crazy idea, but my friend had a problem where none of his
    system disks would validate. Not a single one. So he tried
    Kickstarting with a fresh backup copy of KS 1.2. No more problems.
    I've heard of this happening a few times, where Kickstart just wears
    out or something.

| 556.2 | similar observation | MTBLUE::PFISTER_ROB |  | Fri Jun 19 1987 12:19 | 6 |
| | I had a similar observation once where an application would only
    work after I had powered down, kickstarted, workbench, and then that
    program. It turned out that some calls were getting short integers
    instead of the long ones it expected, and the power down zero'd
    everything in the top 1/2 of the long integer, so it worked right
    once. Perhaps KickStart has a similar flaw somewhere?

| 556.3 | I'll give it a try | HYSTER::DEARBORN | Trouvez Mieux | Fri Jun 19 1987 13:28 | 9 |
| | Powering down has had no difference. I'll try the new Kickstart
    tonight...although I'm a little worried about putting my only/original
    Kickstart disk in. I've been working off my one backup copy (like
    a good boy).

    I hope this takes care of it.

| | I tried a new copy of Kickstart. No difference. I called the Memory
    Location and they said it was probably the chip that controls the
    drives...

    Taking it in today.

| | Well, here's the end of the story. The internal drive can write
    but can't read. For some reason, the circuits are shot...so that
    means replacement time.

    Oh well, at least I will get one of those newer quieter drives.
    (My Amiga is rather old.)

| 556.6 | Ya Hoo! | HYSTER::DEARBORN | Trouvez Mieux | Tue Jun 30 1987 11:09 | 18 |
| | The Memory Location comes thru! They replaced the internal drive.
     Replacement cost, $145. I returned home to find that the external
    drive still did not work properly. I took everything back. Sure
    enough, the external drive is shot and had to be replaced too.

    They gave me a new external drive for FREE! They couldn't understand
    how both could go bad at once so they decided I needed a break.
     So in the end, I wound up with two new Panasonic drives for the
    replacement price of one.

    Nice people. Maybe I should buy a Supra drive from them.

    By the way, all service was performed overnight.

    Everything is back on track now...
