I must admit I only plaed with it for a couple of minutes - and

If it works I might even end up sending a barrel of good Munich beer

| | Uedit allows you to redefine keys .. I do not have a European keyboard,
but I imagine the creation of key macros is no different between
the two. The complete 100 page user's guide is only available from
the author of the program. Moight want to contact him directly via
    surface mail.

| | I had a closer look a couple of days ago.

I was able to roughly figure out how to do it but it still seems
a major rewrite of the CONFIG! files.

For starters, I tried swapping the X and Y keys on the main keyboard.
It worked ok, but with a funny effect: if I typed an Y or X in column
1 it only echoed after s few seconds (with any ther cahracters typed
after it). If typed in any other column, it echoes immediately.

Also, the little documentation that cpmes with the shareware package
tells you should not redefine some of the KP keys; you'd have to
do it for a German keyboard, though, because e.g. { } ~ are on shifted
    numeric keypad keys...

All in all, it doesn't seem trivial.

I have downloaded Uedit V2.0 (thanks again Paul) and have been
using it for a few days now. I like the changes the "author" has
made and in general, the direction he appears to be taking this
product. I have send him my $25 and am patiently waiting for
receipt of the manual before I plunge head long into reconfiguring
it to meet my particular needs.

Question - the only menu item in the supplied Config! that I
haven't figured out yet is "BUSIES". Anyone got any
                  idea what this does?
       Thanks

| | Well I had a look at V2.0 too...

I agree that this looks like a very powerful editor. However (see
my previous replies) this is not usable over here....

I was able to figure out how to make the swapped/changed characters
echo immediately (see .7). But, there's a *BIG* but.. I still cannot
make the 'multinational' characters (like , , , ) to work.
The insertChar function seems to ignore any codes >127; even worse,
UEDIT doesn't load any files with codes >127 in them (or actually it
does, but throws them away after complaining about 'odd' characters
    in the file).

    FLAME ON

*** WHAT THE H**L IS SO ODD ABOUT CHARACTERS >127 ???

The Amiga has a full multinational character set (even US Amigas
do, though the keyboard doesn't have them). Why shouldn't an editor
    handle them.????

    Flame off.

The author hasn't earned his $25 from me yet...

| | Does anyone know if the author of Uedit can be reached on the net?

Or is anyone going to send in his $25 in the near future?

I have written him a letter (which is lying on my desk at the moment)
which I was going to send by SnailMail, asking whether there's any
chance of non-US keyboard support... but I'd rather send it
    electronically if possible.

While playing around with it trying to figure out how to make a
German keyboard work (you can't) I've learned to like it so much
that I'd hate to live without it...

| | well the letter is on its way...

In the meantime I got impatient and zapped the Uedit V2.0 image
file to handle non-US keyboards. Character codes >127 still don't
work so you cannot use or etc. but all others work.

Some of the bindings will have to be changed (depending on the
keyboard). I changed the bindings extensively to be more similar
    to EDT/SEDT/LSE etc.

| | A couple of days ago I received UEdit V2.2 from the author.

He seems to have at least attempted to include support for
multinational characters (as well as some other features).

I gave it a quick try, but there still seems to be some problems...

The shareware disk now contains a 'skinny UE' which cannot compile
    config! files but is smaller.

If anyone's interested, I can upload the new version one of these
days (but probably only towards end of the week).

I have just uploaded the latest UEDIT shareware arc (version 2.3a)
for those who may be interested. The actual UEDIT program is
again, a "skinny" version, as commented on in .12.

There are some new features included with this release (supposedly
the last release for 6-12 months), such as multiple programmable
rulers, automatic pagination and page numbering, journalling (sort
of - it automatically saves the program after a user specified
time of inaction), better implementation of reformat, better
       printer interfacing, etc., etc.

       Archive can be found at:

| 383.16 | V2.3A BUG - BEWARE | POLAR::GOSLING | KANATA MFG I.S. | Tue Dec 08 1987 13:27 | 17 |
| | re:.14 - good new - bad news!

The bad news is that I (and I suppose all registered users of
UEDIT) just recieved notice from Rick Stiles that there are a
couple of bugs in v2.3a of UEDIT, the major one being that it
gulps memory when run from Workbench.

The good news is that for the price of mailing the original
diskettes back and a stamped, self addressed envelope, Rick will
be mailing out v2.3c which fixes the bugs and has a couple of new
       features added.

As soon as I get this latest release, I will upload the associated
       shareware arc.

| 383.17 | UEDIT VERSION 2.3D AVAILABLE | POLAR::GOSLING | KANATA MFG I.S. | Thu Feb 04 1988 09:57 | 13 |

UEDIT V2.3D can be found in polar::amiga_public - specifically

                        polar::amiga_public:uedit23.arc

This version fixes the bugs in v2.3a and has some additional
features. This is still the "skinny" version meaning that you
can't compile commands, and limiting you to having 4 files open at
the same time. If you want the full blown version and detailed
manual, read the ordering instructions contained in the arc.

| 383.19 | PATCHED VERSION OF 2.3F AVAILABLE | POLAR::GOSLING | Think KANATA INC. | Wed May 18 1988 12:40 | 30 |
| |
I have just uploaded a 'patched' copy of version 2.3f for Rick
Stiles' Uedit editor (ref .17 & .18 for additional details). I
pulled the unpatched version from my Amiga_Public directory a
couple of days ago, so this one will be the latest and the
greatest **. I have added a "P" to the file name in order to
reduce the confusion. Anyone that has copied Uedit23f.arc to
their directories would be advised to blow it away and replace it
       with this patched version.

** Actually, this is not the latest and greatest version.
Registered owners have been advised of a version which includes
a spelling checker, which Rick will gladly ship you for WHAT
YOU consider is a reasonable donation for his effort in adding
this feature. Over and above the spelling checker it is
functionally the same as 2.3f. The spelling checker works
similar to Spella (for those who are familiar with that
product) in that it checks your document against a dictionary
and marks words (with a character of your choice) it can't
find. In addition, this speller allows you to check individual
words without having to check the entire document (ala Spella).
If you have lots of RAM, you can have it automatically check
every word as it is being typed. I haven't tried that yet, so
can't comment on performance - Rick says its not bad!?

| 383.20 | VERSION 2.3H NOW AVAILABLE | POLAR::GOSLING | Think KANATA INC. | Tue Aug 30 1988 10:43 | 29 |
| | I have uploaded the latest shareware version of UEDIT - UES v2.3H
       - onto POLAR::AMIGA_PUBLIC. This version of UES brings with it a
number of minor enhancements and fixes from the previous version I
posted. The major difference is the AREXX interface.

This time, rather than just the minimum UES related files, I used
TRACKER to copy the entire shareware disk, and then arc'd the
'track' files into UESONE.ARC and UESTWO.ARC. The first arc
       contains a README.1ST file, TRACKER, TRACKER.DOC, and 2 'track'
files (tracks 0-19 and 20-39). The second arc contains the
remaining 2 'track' files (tracks 40-59 and 60-79).

I used TRACKER, as it is the easiest way I have found for getting
the contents of a full 3.5" disk onto 2 x 5.25" IBM formatted
disks, which I can then kermit to the VAX from my VAXmate - saving
hours of down and up loading via phone and modem.

If you register your use of UES with Rick Stiles, you will recieve
a PRIVATE disk that contains the manual, a more verbose version of
UEDIT, and a number of other configuration files. There is also a
version available with a spelling checker. If you elect to use
only the shareware version, at least support his efforts via the
       suggested 'shareware' contribution.

If you have any problems with these arc's or the track files, let
       me know.
