| 39.8 | Hair loss under a harness... | IAMNRA::SULLIVAN | IdreamedIsawJoeHilllastnight | Sat Feb 08 1997 16:54 | 30 |
| | This is the closest topic I found for this question:
My sable had a nylon "H" harness on her and I left it on, like a collar
on a dog. I made sure it was not too tight - space for a finger to easily
slip between the loops and her body. I came home the other night and
she was wheezing and clearly not well. I was worried that the harness
might be interfering with her breathing so I removed it.
What I saw then upset me greatly. Her fur under the front loop of her
harness was gone and the skin looked tender. I left the collar off and
went to an appointment.
When I got home several hours later I was scared that she would be worse,
but to my delight she was happy and wanted to play. She has continued to
recover in the last 3 days, but I am still worried on what the harness
might have done to her. Was it an allergy? Was it something I should have
known about?
I do have to say she seems much happier overall without the harness than
with. I used it to have a bell on her, but I think that upset her too. I
know than when I gave her chineese worry balls [the kind you roll in your
hand] with little bells in them she chased them and hissed at them but
would not play with them. Maybe the constant ring-ring-ring was making
her crazy!
Anyway, any advise would be appreciated as I'm a fairly new ferret owner
and still have lots to learn.
	Thanks,

| | Sable is quickly regrowing her hair and is much happier without the
harness and bell. Now, when she hears the kind of bell she had on her
harness she hisses. I am not sure if the harness bothered her more or
if it was the bell that annoyed her so.
	Thanks,

| | I had the same problem with the "H" harness. They are very good to
secure them but i found that the material is to rough to have on
constantly . The rubbing "as they roll over and rub on their backs"
starts to some how wear off the hair. Mandy was not to happy when i
introduced her to the bell, but by day 2 she didn't even seem to notice
it. I got her a ferret collar from the catolog "pink- of course", i
always take it off when i put her in bed for the night. In the morning
as soon as she hears the bell she's up and at it. I now only use the
"H" harness when i take her outside.

Hope this helps you a bit , Stephanie.

| | I have pretty much given up on the harness and also only use it outside
or extreme circumstances [visiting friends, for instance].
I was very worried when I first saw how sable's fur and fallen out where
the harness was, but now it's grown back well and she is much much much
happier without the bell. I though she had become used to it, but I think
I was wrong and she just learned to tolerate it.
