1252.0. "ECO2 - logging stopped" by 51564::WESTERBACK (Mai pen rai!) Tue Mar 26 1996 04:32

    Installed ECO2 on VMS Alpha 6.1 on Friday. Everything looked OK until 
    yesterday. This morning when I tried to monitor or connect to any
    of my 40+ systems, I could only see events up till midnight, nothing
    afterwards. While I was in monitor/connect mode I got all events
    displayed on the screen, but as soon as I exited PCM, and then 
    reentered again, there was nothing to see after midnight. So it seems
    nothing went into the logs. Also tried extract, nothing to see at all.
    
    A reboot made everything work OK for now, but how long...?
    
    The disks had plenty of free space, 2 mill blocks on both log and 
    archive disk. What might be intereting is that just at midnight I
    have a scheduler job that does archiving. It contains commands like:
    
    $ console archive/keep='save_time'/noconfirm  combat
    
    This procedure has been running like this every night, but just
    yesterday I increased  'save_time' from 120 to 168, which meant
    that tonight nothing was archived at all. Sounds like no coincidence
    that just as the archive job was running, all logging stopped?
    
    Any thoughts?

While a particular system is being archived nothing will be logged for that
system. It won't effect the other nodes.

Was the archive job still running this morning, i.e., was it hung?

    No, the logfiles for the archiving job looks OK, it finished in

    OK, so tonight the scheduled archiving ran again, took 4 minutes this
    time, but still didn't find anything to archive because of the 
    increase in archive time, I guess tomorrow there will actually be
    something to archive. But controller process 2 died at that time:

    OK, status this morning:
    
    Archiving ran at midnight, took 6 minutes. Only 13 of the systems had
    anything to archive. Now this morning those systems are OK, can do
    monitor/connect and see all data up to present.
    
    But the other systems, with nothin to archive (most likely because they
    weren't switched over to PCM a week ago, used local console instead)
    show the same symptom. Only data up till midnight can be seen. New
    events is seen while connected to PCM, but if I exit and reenter PCM
    they're gone.
    
    I see similar things in note 1241, so there seems to be something fishy
    here when there's nothing to archive.
    
    A show system looks OK, no archiving processes there. As I said the
    scheduler archiving job finished OK. Is there anything else I can
    check when this occurs? I'm not too familiar with all the PCM logs.
    A restart of PCM fixed everything it seems.

    As a workaround I have put a console restart at the end of my archiving
    procedure, but is this problem recognized and looked at? Or should I 
    log an IPMT? I'd be willing to help testing any fixes, as we have about
    40 inhouse systems hooked up and can do some testing here (everyone's
    so used to stops and reboots of PCM by now...)

    Just an update on this oldie:
    
    Tried to IPMT, but our CSC said there was already an IPMT for 
    something similar... After awhile they got me a pointer to ECO3,
    and after installing that the problem seems to have disappeared.
