Hi,

	I am investigating the use of CM to monitor the console activity of
several DEC machines but also for reporting events of non-DEC equipments which 
	- either offer a serial interface but with a specific protocol
	- or do not offer serial interface at all

	If these events are translated to ASCII strings, any suggestion to make
these events available to CM ?

    Michel,
      It sounds like you will have to use the pseudo-terminal interface. An
    example, our own LPS20 printers do not have serial console ports rather
    they are managed via an application called LPS$CONSOLE. Using the
    pseudo-terminal interface we run this image in a process that
    is "connected" to one side of a pseudo-terminal interface that has Console
    Manager connected to the other side. The bottom line is if you have an
    application interface to a device then you can plug it in to Console
    Manager easily. VCS 1.4 also has this functionality.

	This pseudo-terminal feature seems to be the solution.

	Is there some documentation/examples available for OSF1 ? (I did'nt find
any info in the CM V1.0 documentation)

    another option is to use a hardware protocol converter that does the
    job for you. This solution is used by Chemical Bank, in New York, for
    AS/400 systems connected to VCS.

     the Psuedo terminal transport was not in V1.0. 

Re .3

    Protocol converters are best for where the console sends data down a line in
a non rs232 ascii format. The psuedo-terminal is for where the console subsystem
interacts directly with a control program running on another host ( in this case
the CM host).

    There is a bit of information on pseudo-terminals in Section 2.5 of
    the V1.1 Users' Guide, and in Section 6.1.5 of the V1.1 Installation
    Guide (the OSF part).
    
    Please bear with us on this one, we will be providing more information
    on this topic for the field test update kit.
