I'm linked to goldos and I'm seeing the following: 	

gold> build BINARY_vmunix
relative path: ./kernel.
string passed to /usr/sde/ode3.0/tools/alpha_ace/bin/make:
   make -cF BINARY_vmunix 
make: illegal option -- c
usage: make [-eiknqrst] [-D variable] [-d flags] [-f makefile ]
        [-I directory] [-j max_jobs] [variable=value]

Do I need to have a different tools dir in my path?

Nope, the right make is in goldos/tools/alpha_OSF1/alpha/hostbin, but since this tree is so old we compress the tools area to save space on secret, so the make is there as make.gz and your search path falls through to the ode make instead. Please use the SSB BL of goldos - goldos.bl12 rather than the submit tree for this work. Nope, the right make is in goldos/tools/alpha_OSF1/alpha/hostbin, but since 
this tree is so old we compress the tools area to save space on secret, so the 
make is there as make.gz and your search path falls through to the ode make 
instead.
 Please use the SSB BL of goldos - goldos.bl12 rather than the submit tree for 
this work. The goldos tree is primarily there as a reference at this point and
