This turns out to be the result of a bug fix to the ode command
gendatafile. It was supposed to also remove comments between
oldlog and endlog as well as log and endlog, but in fact does
neither.
I have found an older version without this fix which I will install
everywhere, and also have spoken to DECWEST about this problem.
I will be filing a PTT report shortly. For now we can be
functional without this lastest fix.

| pass.1 kit. I was under the impression that this occured after
| every build.
