This may be in the manual, but I'll ask it anyway:
I have played a little with creating my own Doctypes in order
to get some local changes for our group (such as "Printed in
the U.K." instead of the U.S. as comes as standard!). This is
fairly straight-forward to do (even without a T X manual).
E
Now want I want to do is the be able to write my own tags
to provide new funtional ways of writting text that are
not provided as standard. I expect I shall want to back this
up by writing some supporting TeX code.
The problem is that I can't see how to do other than a) use
the undocumented <define> tag to extend the pre-processor in
terms of itself or b) add or change the TeX macros which
support existing tags.
I have scanned around the files installed in order to find
clues as to how this can be done to no avail.
Any ideas?

Malcolm:
I cannot give you advise on defining tags; I'll leave that for
folks that are more technically adept in this area of VAX DOC.
(I'm sure others will answer your note with specific info.)
I just wanted to inform you that the needed documentation
is being written presently. The book being written (currently
called _The_Tag_Designer's_Guide_) will cover the conceptual and
tutorial info. required for users to define and use their own tags.
Note that this book will be for DIGITAL internal use only (at least
for its first release). We're not sure when it will be available,
as yet.
I imagine that you're thinking "A lot of good that does me." :-)
If you *really* could use some preliminary info (it hasn't even
been technically reviewed yet), we can place a copy in the internal
public directory VAXUUM::USE3$:[SDML.V10], which you can copy.
BEWARE...it will be a first draft and unsupported for the time
being (the development group doesn't have the time or resources
to support tag-designing until the book is officially released.)
So, if that would be of help to you, we'll place the prelimary
draft in that directory today, in the file Tag_Translator.LN03 or .POST.
If you have comments on the book, send them to
VAXUUM::CLOSET::METCALFE (no questions though...).
