    Sorry to report the two fixes mentioned don't do anything... at
    least they don't work for me.

    \global\def\setlpdesign { \hoffset=0pt } does not take effect
    either in the .DESIGN file mentioned in 453.0, or as an <INCLUDE_
    TEX_FILE> of the recommended defaults shown in 406.1.

    /DEVICE=(H=72) does nothing that I can see, either.

    Is it possible to give me some other ways to try workarounds?

    72 points is the default horizontal offset in the device converter,
    so using this value just reproduces the default situation.

    If you use /DEVICE=(H=36), for instance, it should move your page
    image 1/2 inch to the left. (The units are points: 72 points to
    the inch.)

    $ SET FACE/COLOR=RED/LOOKS=DUMB

    Sorry, all. After I (a) read note 453.3, and (b) typed in Patti's
    \hoffset fix EXACTLY the way she indicates, I now have MAIL output
    that very nicely sets at 13 picas from the left physical edge...

    I don't know why the \hoffset=0pt in the DOC$STANDARD_FORMATS does
    not take effect, but in a DOC$PERSONAL_FORMATS it is now working
    fine. Ah well, now on to my next hack...
