    is that the *whole* lis file? if you had more than 30 linetoolong
    warnings, TeX may have stopped for that. If that's all, then the
    .DVI_LN3 file should be okay.

    Yes, that is the whole .LIS file. I tried processing the DVI_LN3
    file with DOCUMENT/NOTAG/NOTEXT, and I got a message saying that
    that the device converter found errors. Drat!

    ps Why do warnings make TeX die? Will they in the final product?

| 301.3 | More info | DSSDEV::WAGNER |  | Fri Apr 24 1987 13:07 | 6 |
| | PPS: The book has a preface, four chapters, and a couple of appendixes.
    So, TeX is only making it through the first few elements before
    it dies. Didn't know if it was clear from the .LIS file that TeX
    stopped before all the elements had been processed.

    Another twist: I ran the bookbuild interactively, and wonder of
    wonders! it worked all the way through. I didn't change anything,
    but I will try batch again now just to see what happens. Will keep
    you posted.

| 301.5 | batch still fails. | DSSDEV::WAGNER |  | Fri Apr 24 1987 16:24 | 10 |
| | Still fails in batch. I'm using the following command, which is
    defined as a symbol, MAKEBOOK, in my login.com:

    DOCUMENT/BATCH=(LOG=[]BOOK.LOG,NOTIFY,NOPRINT)/NOPRINT/CONTENTS/INDEX

    I give it my profile's file name, the doctype S.H, and the LN03
    destination.

| 301.6 | too many line-too-long messages | VAXUUM::KOHLBRENNER |  | Fri Apr 24 1987 17:10 | 8 |
| | I think the line-too-long stuff is being demoted to an I-level
    error, which will let TeX keep going. But it appears to die
    after 30 of the W-level warnings now. The assumption is
    (I think) that if you have 30 warnings, the output is not
    much good. Our error is that we made line-too-long of "W"
    level severity; we all know that you can have
    zillions of those errors and have perfectly good looking
    output...

| 301.7 | still not enough info | CLOSET::ANKLAM |  | Sat Apr 25 1987 10:05 | 11 |
|  |
    yes, most TeX messages are demoted to I-level, so only really serious
    things will cause it to stop. Gayle, I tried to check out your LOG
    and LIS files on DSSDEV, but they are protected. There really has
    to be something in the LIS or the LOG besides what you put in .0

    processing interactively but not in batch suggests maybe a file
    quota problem? your LOGIN.COM doesn't set BASELEVEL 7?

| 301.8 | Pointer to more info | DSSDEV::WAGNER |  | Mon Apr 27 1987 11:11 | 15 |
| | Could be a file quota problem. How can I tell if it is?
    My login.com does contain the BASELEVEL 7 command.

    You are welcome to look at the .LOG and .LIS files, which I have
    unprotected. The files are at the following locations:

    DSSDEV::USERA$:[WAGNER.FORMS.BOOK.NEW]BOOK.LOG
    DSSDEV::USERA$:[WAGNER.FORMS.BOOK.NEW]3254PRO.LIS

    Sorry for the long directory names.

    If you need access to other files in that directory, send mail and
    I'll set the protection for you.

| | The wizard is anyone you can find who'll admit knowing TeX.

    Actually, you'll need to provide more information than what you've
    given such as a copy of the log file. Also, have you tried just
    running the chapters individually? With a profile I think you can
    generate a complete and accurate book in pieces.

    I have been helping off line with this. It is the BL7 pool size
    problem.

    But Todd is correct; it's much more helpful (saves time for everyone)
    if problems noted here are accompanied by .LIS or .LOG files that
    tell the whole story (base level, doctype, device, etc.)

    There are no more 'wizard' messages (if anyone sees one in BL8,
    please let us know!) All output from TeX comes from standard VMS
    messages.
