| | Besides file extensions, the other change affects those who have local doctypes
based on our standard doctypes. The names and extensions of those standard
.DTP files have been changed, so the line in your .DTP file which says
"\input DOC$STANDARD_FORMATS:foo.DTP" will have to be changed.
Incidentally, before people start yelling at us for changing names midstream,
we had to do it to conform to SQM guidelines. We did *not* do it on a whim
(though, who knows, we may do it on a whim for V1.1 (-;).

| | Is there a document that describes changes between BL07 and the next
release? This is the first I've heard about file extension changes, and
now I'm curiouser and curiouser.
Thanx

    The good news is that there are no SDML tag syntax changes. A BL7
    file will run on BL8, regardless of whether its filetype is GNC
    or SDML. If it doesn't, it's a bug. The converter will be changed
    (it includes bug fixes) mainly in that its output file will be
    named .SDML and the input file will stay GNC.

| 292.5 | Ghosts of Old Drafts Past... | ALIEN::BELMAN |  | Fri May 01 1987 10:34 | 11 |
| | I recently did a bookbuild using BL7 and got lots of "line too long"
    errors. So I thought, what the heck, I'll try BL8. The book built,
    but it contained old draft material -- before I had entered edits
    (LOTS of edits). I panicked until I checked the source files, and
    they contained the edits. There were lots of intermediary files
    hanging around in the directory, so I moved all the source files
    to another, otherwise empty directory, and the build went fine.

    My guess is, then, that DOCUMENT used some old intermediate file.
    If it does that, a warning to that effect would probably be useful.
    The other possibility is that I have finally gone off the wall...
 |
| 292.6 | gotcha? | VAXUUM::KOHLBRENNER |  | Fri May 01 1987 11:20 | 15 |
| | Did your bookbuild command line point at device:[directory]
    explicitly?  If you said

    $ DOCU dev:[dir]foo doctype dest

    then DOCUMENT tried to default the filetype to SDML. If it
    didn't find dev:[dir]foo.sdml, then it removed the "sdml" and
    tried to use "gnc" (as a kindness to folks whose alarms did
    not go off this morning). But, there is a bug... when "gnc"
    gets added the "dev:[dir]" part gets dropped! SO it then
    went looking for "[]foo.gnc" instead of "dev:[dir]foo.gnc".
    If it found []foo.gnc, it proceeded happily on its way,
    probably with the wrong file, containing <element> tags that
    were referencing old GNC files.

| 292.7 | I don't think so, but not sure | VAXUUM::BELMAN |  | Fri May 01 1987 14:28 | 10 |
| | No, I was in the directory where the files were, so the command
    line was

    $ DOCUMENT/CONTENTS/INDEX xxxxPROFILE.GNC S.S LN03

    However, as you see, my file types are still .GNC -- but
    I had PURGEd, so there weren't old versions of the sourcefiles
    around. That's why I concluded it must be an intermediate
    file...

| 292.10 | The light dawns... | ALIEN::BELMAN |  | Mon May 04 1987 09:16 | 3 |
| | I was getting old draft material because I was printing the
    .LN3 file -- just noticed that it is now .LN03. Makes a
    good argument for cleaning up the old directory...

    Thanks for posting the info. That was going to be a tricky bug to
