I am finding that just about all my old files (once re-coded for
Version T1.0) will run in GENERAL, IF I add <P> tags before all
my LISTS (unnumbered and stacked especially). BUT...........
if I run those same files in MANUAL.GUIDE or say SOFTWARE.GUIDE
I get LINE TOO LONG ERRORS (CAN NOT SET OFF PAGE).
WHAT IS THE STORY HERE ???????????????
Before you could switch DOCTYPES and only worry about TABLES
and how they would fit, NOW everything comes up with ERRORS.
ESPECIALLY on LISTS. Doesn't DOCUMENT wrap like it use to ?
Isn't automatic ? Or does the writer have to adjust for this ?
I am not bitchin' I am trying to figure out what is going on.
Right now I am limited to GENERAL and I am trying to get others
at my site to go for DOCUMENT but all I have to show is GENERAL
and OVERHEADS (Which is great for overhead presentations !)
A little help please.........

Sorry, I need examples also. The page width for the GENERAL doctype
is larger than for the other doctypes, which would explain why things
that fit on a GENERAL page won't fit on a MANUAL page. However,
there haven't been any major changes in the page width in the new
release. Is the output signficantly different? Or is it just that
now you are getting messages whereas before all you got were items
in the .LIS file?

| 46.3 | it's the messages | CLOSET::ANKLAM | Wed Mar 04 1987 09:31 | 40 | |
Rick sent me a file, and I checked it out. The differences in the
document types between Base Level 6 and T1.0 are negligible. The
difference that Rick is seeing is that in BL6, messages about
'overfull hboxes' (lines too long for the page) were confined to
the .LIS file, and never appeared on the terminal. In T1.0, the
messages are printed on the terminal.
In the file sent to me, there were a number of monospaced examples
that exceeded the text margin. A LIS file from BL6 reports these
as overfull, as do messages in T1.0. Similarly, the use of
<list>(stacked) for text results in the text lines being forced
to stay on one line, rather than to wrap; these also stick out in
the margin.
Most problems in the file can be corrected by (1) removing the extra
blank spaces at the start of the lines in the codexample, i.e.
<display>
| this is a line
to
<display>
| this is a line
and (2) changing the use of <list>(STACKED) to <list>(SIMPLE), i.e
<list>(stacked)
<le>PF2 throughout the system PF2 is used for help ....
to:
<list>(simple)
<le>PF2 throughout the system....

Extra paragraph tags do not make a difference.
