We have a customer who is looking at converting from VAX/VMS INGRES to
Rdb. The only question at this point is how much it will cost to
convert their existing applications. Because we're not allowed to look
at the code, we're only going to be able to talk in vague generalities
(isn't that what sales support does best?)
In any event, how hard is it to convert from INGRES to Rdb? I noticed
in note 693.1 that some translators were being developed. Does anyone
have any experience with translators?
Thanks,
- Dave

The translators are currently being shipped with the ULTRIX/SQL
precompiler kits. Basically, they convert embedded SQL statements from
one SQL dialect ( e.g. Ingres ) to the other ( Rdb ). The translators
only handle embedded SQL. The ease/difficulty of the port will depend
on how many Ingres features/extensions they are using. If they are
using the Ingres tools ( rbf, qbf, abf, vifred, etc. ), then the tools
won't help much.
You might want to grab the ULTRIX/SQL Guide to Portable Applications
from reorg::ultrixsqlpre_doc$public:PRE_V20_PORTABLE_APPS_GD.PS
Among other things, this book has two appendices in the back that
compare Rdb and ULTRIX/SQL statement by statement and details what the
translators do with each statement. I think this will give you an idea
of what won't easily translate.
