| | John,

ALLY comes from the same heritage as Digital's 4GL product VAX RALLY.
As you know RALLY today will only run under VAX VMS. In the future this
will change. There is no 4GL developed by Digital available on the
Ultrix platform. If you are are selling Ultrix and Ultrix/SQL you would
want to use the 4GL tools from ASK/Ingres.

Mapper is an old product from UNISYS. I have no experience with the
product but do know someone who use to support it for UNISYS many years
ago. Try Denis Prieur at OTO. He will most likely not respond until the
end of the month, due to a large project he is finishing.

Do you mean DMS-II which runs on a UNISYS (Burroughs) platform? They
may be UNISYS now, but it helps to refer to them as Sperry and
Burroughs when talking about UNISYS' mainframes.

DMS-II is a (sort of) CODASYL compliant database with extensions. It
could be positioned against Digital's DBMS-32. Sometimes, people used
DMS-II as little more than a glorified indexed file system. Unless
this shop is very small or totally batch, you will also need to
identify the TP monitor. GEMCOS is the older product. COMS is the
newer one. Neither one is much like ACMS.

LINC is a 4GL and query tool from Burroughs that can use DMS-II
    databases (and maybe ISAM files).

Mapper is a 4GL and query tool from Sperry. I'm not sure if they
ported Mapper to Burroughs systems or LINC to Sperry systems.

    ALLY is explained in .1

Client-server? How to you intend to talk to the Burroughs system? Via
SNA? TCP?IP (does Burroughs support TCP/IP?)

If none of the above, then I suggest that you look into BURCOM, a
Burroughs-VAX communications package. It contains callable terminal
emulation routines that would allow you to roll-your own client-server
software. (Sort of like Digital's 3270 DataStream Interface product,
only not as good.) Their product isn't expensive and it works, but
frankly, the quality could be better. It only runs on VMS. You may
find a similar product for ULTRIX from someone else

    Good luck,

    Steve

If you can consider/recommend a conversion (to VMS) then there is a
product called CLONE which is supposed to convert Burroughs COBOL to
VAX COBOL. Look for it in back issue of Sales Update. They may even
    produce something for ULTRIX.

| | There is a corporate program now called Unisys Competitive Migration
Program headed by Walter Manter from ISB. He should be able to
help you with any Unisys migration effort worldwide. There is a
dedicated Notes conference for Unisys migration, namely:

    FASDER::Unisys_Conversion

If you cross-post your note in this Notes file, you can establish
contact with all ex-UNISYS (both Burroughs and Sperry types) within
Digital. Though I am an ex-Burroughs as well as ex-Sperry type,
my Burroughs knowledge is very rusty, since I worked for them in
    mid seventies.

    regards

    Murli
