We have a customer with an H.P. 960 machine and wants to buy a VAX. the H.P. acts as an OLTP computer and the customer wants the vax as a batch machine. Our problem is: Both machine should run a Powerhouse based application. the data on H.P. machine is stored in a IMAGE db . every night the whole database from the IMAGE should be transfered to Rdb on the VAX . The customer insists to do full Back-up from IMAGE to 12 mag tape (1-1.5 GB) and load it to Rdb on the VAX. (the tape copy is used as a back-up of the IMAGE as well as input data for load the Rdb) Our Questions are : What is the best and Quickest way to convert IMAGE DB on H.P to Rdb on VAX on nightly basis ? Has it been done before anywhere ? Who in DEC has the knowledge How to do it ? Who in COGNOS can be our contact and support ? Thanks Aya

Hi,
A customer in London is thinking about this conversion from Image DB to
Rdb/VMS. Again the common link is PoerHouse.
I suggest you contact either Mike Thomas or Mike Hudgell at Cognos UK.
Telephone number is +44-344-486668, and they may be able to help.
regards,
Iain Stephen.

I have received very valuable help on VAX-HP questions from Skip
Williamson in the Center for Migration Services in Colorado Springs.
Skip's DTN is 523-2011.
In extracting from HP to VAX, data format conversion issues arise
because the two systems store data differently. Skip's groups has
routines to assist in the data conversions.

You might also reference the notes conference TYFYS::HP_MIGRATION.
(A major hint....RDB may not be the best fit for HP IMAGE)
Many HP sites simply used Image (which was FREE) for record locking.
It is NOT a true relational database and most of the datasets are
accessed much like a regular RMS indexed file.
Refer to the conference above (Press KP7 to add).
