I just finished reading the functional specs of a product called AIMS made by a company called Technology Concepts Inc. I do not know were these guys are based. I do not even know the translation of the acronym (strangely enough, the document does not say). The product is positionned as an Application Integration tool (hence probably the first two letters of the acronym). What is interesting is the way it works. It appears as a DSRI-compliant database management system - so can be accessed from any DSRI-compliant front-end. It builds a 'virtual' database, complete with journalling and transaction control. The interesting bit is that instead of taking its data from disk, it gets it from existing interactive applications running on IBM mainframes - it talks to the applications by simulating a human terminal user. To startup the product, you first need to describe your 'virtual' database(s) in terms of TABLES, then you describe your IBM applications, and link both ends together, so that AIMS know what to do when the user wants to do a SELECT ... on a virtual table : what IBM application to call (and how to do this), what actions to take (what keystrokes to simulate, cursor movements, ...) in order to get the desired data back. The same mechanism is used for updates, with AIMS keeping the necessary journals and transaction controls. Has anyone ever heard of this product ? It must have been around for some time - the spec I have here is for release 2.0. /albert

I seem to remember Technology Concepts being based in Sudbury, Mass.
They were quite recently taken over by Bell South I believe.

The AIMS system is used by Bell Atlantic (mother company of TCI) to
integration their OSS (Operation Support System) environment, where
applications used by the same clerck may run on various hardware and in
various locations.
The Digital contact in the US is Kathy Hughes @PDM in the Telecom
Business Group.
AIMS is targeted to Telco's, although might be adapted and used by any
corporation experiencing similar multi-vendor integration problems.
Regards, Luc.
PS : forget about the meaning of AIMS, the product changed name
recently (oops I forgot the new name).

I just participated, along with a group from the telcomm DCC, in a review of TCI. Inc. and the MetaPower product. If you have specific questions, feel free to send mail (I don't get into this conference all that frequently). -dave

Thanks for the info. Actually, I was interested to find out what assistance they needed from us (Digital) in order to develop their tool. They had to develop a DSRI compliant database, and as far as I know, the only document we ever made publicly available was the DSRI handbook - and this was more written from the point of view of 'how to write applications to USE DSRI-compliant databases' than how to write database systems that are DSRI compliant - and even this one is no longer up to date, nor even available. /albert
