My customer has Sybase installed and he now would like to
know how to access Sybase data using VAX language - say cobol.
There is a module in Sybase called DB-LIBRARY - says one notes
conference - containing capabilities that allow "non-Sybase
products to communicate with (Sybase) data-server". Does anybody
have experiencies in using this interface tool? What is required
to make the interface work? What is Open Server software (Sybase
terminology)?

The DBlibs are used for several purposes. They must be used if Sybase
Trans-Act SQL is used to interpret the SQL. They are required if Sybase
tools (like APT) are used to develop applications.
Open Server is a collection of subroutines and RPC calls that are used
to access Sybase from outside Sybase or access non-Sybase data from a
Sybase system.
These library routines are generally called from programs. I suppose
you could set up generic interfaces, but it would not be trivial.

I took the class 1.5 years ago and have the documentation. Also, one
of the PSS residents on my account is doing DB-LIB calls from the C
language. Give me a call at dtn 439-5462 if I can help.
