I have two customers that I am confronting a similar competitive
situation. The customers have many PC's throughout the organization and
they want to have their PC users access the same data that is stored on
their VAX system. I know that the customer can use SQL/Services from
their PC's to access data stored in their RDB database. The customer(s)
are saying the following:
1.) if they buy Ingres or Oracle they can use these products
front-ends and store/access info on both VAX and PC's
interchangeably and generate reports with Ingres or Oracle.
2.) Oracle and Ingres have load front ends that will translate
and store PC spreadsheet data( i.e. Excel) into Ingres or Oracle
format.
I would appreciate any help regarding above comments and how do we overcome
the typical organization have bi-directional data access in a seamless
fashion that Oracle and Ingres are talking about.

Your probably best posting this question in the SQL Service notes
conference but a couple of ideas.
Has the customer REALLY identified what sort of access they want
their PC users to have? I seen customers ask for this without a
group business plan.
If they really want to make use of the PC's as a front end processor,
SWS/E is working on a desk top interface to ACMS which will be sold
as an ASSET. Check the ACMS note conference for a reference to the
functional specs. Otherwise, you are looking at 3rd party. If you
think having RALLY on the PC would help, drop a line to Marie Murphy
who is looking at the desktop demand for RALLY at present.
If they are only looking at getting into reporting, then we have
TEAMDATA which will extract and format data into the popular PC
packages. If they wish to stay on the desktop, they can look at
MULTIPLEX which provides a 1-2-3 style view into a number of VAX
based DB products including RDB.
Don't forget that many PC products now come with 'hooks' which permit
writing external calls to DB's. While there are some 3rd party
interfaces on the market, writing you own is not out of the question.
Too bad DEC doesn't write a bunch and bundle them with SQL Services.
The key is making sure they understand what they are asking for
and ensure that a full cost/benefit evaluation is done. By the time
you load up a PC with one of the DB products plus networking plus
a spreadsheet product, you are looking at a fair size machine and
quite a cost per seat.

If you watch closely as Ingres starts up their PC download program,
you will see references to "Network Innovations Inc." - this is
the same group that developed MULTIPLEX (re: .1). Nothing different
- Ingres just remarkets the package; MULTIPLEX for Rdb can be puchased
directly from the developers.
(BTW this observation was made about 9 months ago - Ingres may have
removed the Network Innovation reference by now...)

Try using DECdecision from a PC. It will export into popular PC formats
using point & click techniques. This demo is very flashy.
