The following is cross-posted from the ULTRIX_SQL conference (KP7 to add).
I guess that the information I'm after should be the same for Ingres as for
ULTRIX/SQL.

I am interested in finding out as much as I can about what features ULTRIX/SQL
provides for optimising the physical design of databases, and tuning/monitoring
facilities.
I have a copy of the presentation given at DUIT and I wonder if anybody could
expand on some of the following, or provide pointers to further information.
"Database Administrator and Optimization Tools" Page 7
"Flexible/Transparent Data Storage Formats" Page 20
"Restructure, optimize data tables" Page 22
"Monitor RDBMS servers and sessions" Page 22
"Set and tune system & RDBMS resources" Page 22
In particular I would like to know more about the different storage formats
mentioned on page 20 (hash table, Heap etc.). How do these compare to those
provided by Rdb/VMS? Are options analogous to horizontal partitioning, placement
via indices, coincidental record clustering etc. possible?
Thanks,
Pete

I attended this session at DUIT and some of these questions were
asked. The problem was, the ULTRIX-SQL marketing and technical
presentors didn't know RDB so could not provide a comparisonn. This
problem was high lighted.
In the mean-time, look for some early manuals and start digging.

OK, so they didn't know Rdb, but surely someone out there must know ULTRIX/SQL, so if they could tell me a bit about that product I could make the comparison for myself. In the meantime I've resorted to trying to track down some Ingres information, in the hope that this will tell me what I want to know. Thanks for the reply, BTW. Pete | |||||

try the SMURF::ULTRIX_SQL conference. The technical folks in
that conference (Josh etal) are real knowledgeable of INGRES
and obviously ULTRIX_SQL.

I did, 9 days ago. Nobody has replied to my note.
