Great ad in Digital Review, November 13 by Powerhouse showing three
chess pieces. Two are red and labeled Rdb and PowerHouse. One black
one is labeled Oracle. The Oracle one is broken with the Powerhouse and
Rdb ones still in one piece. Title bar says: "CHECKMATE!"

    Then there's a check list:

    				      Oracle	PowerHouse plus Rdb
    				     -------- --------------------
    VAX cluster support No checkmark
    Full function 4GL No checkmark
Rdb & RMS access No checkmark
    Multiple database update No checkmark
    Database level No checkmark
      referential integrity
    Quick to install No checkmark

    The text says:

"Oracle on VAX is just not an alternative to the application
development power that comes from teaming DEC's own Rdb with PowerHouse
from Cognos. Tight integration with DEC architecture has made
PowerHouse the most widely installed VAX 4GL (Computer Intelligence
Digital Review July 24, 1989). So don't be sidetracked by Oracle's
promise of portability to non-DEC platforms, when the real issue
you face today is performance on DEC - and the real performers are
    Rdb and PowerHouse."
Maybe we don't have to advertise after all if Ingres and PowerHouse
    keep this up !!

| 497.2 | Watch out for Ingres though | BAHTAT::BLYTHE | Ee bah gum th's trouble at t'mill | Fri Nov 17 1989 10:05 | 12 |
| re .0 - the last bit about Powerhouse (Cognos) and Ingres - Cognos
are much less of a threat than Ingres - Ingres will sell you the
Ingres database, and if possible, Pyramid hardware. The reps (here
in the UK) are on a similar thing to Oracle reps re Sequent hardware.
    Be wary of Ingres !

I know the Powerhouse product very well - it is getting a bit long
in the tooth in some areas - but it works, and delivers the goods,
and is easy to pick up. They also have Starbase, but as far as I
know, they have sold 1 licence in the UK !
