Can anyone shed some light on the ability and options in accomplishing
the following. I'm familar with the VMS side of things but not
with Ultrix.
My customer is interested in doing all of their development work on
Ultrix, specifically on a DECstation 3100. They want to then be
able to move the application to their VAXCluster running VMS. The
application will be a database application and we're trying to
get them to use RDB. I've determined ( I think ) that the application
would be best written in portable C. I'm trying to figure out if
INGRES would be a good fit as far as the database product? Does
anyone have any comments on this. I'm not familiar with INGRES at
all so any info would be greatly appreciated.
The idea here of course would be to have something that I can move
over without any changes. Is this realistic? How close can we come?
Thanks,
Lee

Any reason as to why they want to develop under Ultrix? Seems that
they would be able to do a better job with VMS' set of case and data
management products, and then just copy it over! Otherwise they'll be
looking at a conversion effort.
Especially in light of the target system being VAX/VMS!

While I also question why anyone would ever leave the cozy confines
of VAX/VMS to do s/w development *especially* with VAX/VMS being the
target, I pass along the following message I received today: (btw,
I have not verified that the below-referenced conference exists.)
There is a notes conference for UTRIX/SQL, SMURF::ULTRIX_SQL.

| 440.4 | Need info on writing portable applications | COOKIE::BERENSON | I'm the NRA | Mon Oct 02 1989 18:35 | 5 |
So, the correct answer is, if the customer has good reason to do cross-development they want to use Ultrix/SQL (or whatever we call the thing when it is finally product announced, remember it is only PROGRAM announced). The main reason is that there will be documentation on how to write portable applications! | |||||
