421.0. "FYI- Informix to be taken over?" by BRICHS::BIRCH (Peter Birch, DTN 842-3297) Fri Sep 08 1989 09:58
From Computer Weekly, 7th September 1989
'Software houses are queuing up to buy US relational
database supplier Informix amid speculation that its
third-quarter results, due next month, will reveal a
loss.
High on the list of potential buyers is Hemel Hempstead
(UK) based Uniplex, an office automation software house
which is keen to expand by takeovers as well as organic
growth.
...
With Informix' share price down at $8, compared with over
$20 before its merger with Innovative Software last year,
Uniplex believes it will not be the only company
interested in buying Informix and its Turbo database.
Earlier this year Informix axed 100 of its 900 US
workforce in a bid to cut costs.
...
If the share price were to fall to $5, Informix would be
valued at the $35m mark, a figure which leads one
commentator to say 'I'd be astounded if Informix lasts as
it is for another 6 months'.
Ken Coulter, Informix European Vice President, says he is
staggered that Informix may be the subject of a bid, but
acknowledges that the company's merger with Innovative
was 'much more difficult than anticipated'.
