Now, I know that pretty well every other note in this notes file
mentions ORACLE, but I've got to do an Rdb Vs Oracle presentation and
don't have 3 weeks to read them all. Now, from what I've read, I know
that Oracle's performance is suspect, is even more suspect on a cluster
& also SMP doesn't help too much (correct ?).
However I would like some POSITIVE comments that Rdb HAS and Oracle
HASN'T. Can anyone point to a list ? I'm thinking alone the lines
of...
Rdb has mutli-file database (Does Oracle ?)
Rdb has Horizontal & Vertical partitioning (Does Oracle ?)
Rdb has Online backup (Does Oracle ?)
Rdb does record level locking (What version of Oracle does this?)
SQL comes free (What comes with Oracle ?)
Come on, somebody out there must have done something like this before.
Any help appreaciated,
Stuart P.

I understand perfectly how you feel about getting the information
you need in a short time. I have started last week gathering
information from the notes files for the similar purpose. Yes, there
are tons of information concerning Rdb and Oracle, and I am still
working on summarizing them. At the meantime, here is my suggestion
to you:
1. Concentrate on the notes file called DB_COMPETITIVIE_HELP. It
resides on "BROKE::$222$DUA16:[NOTES$LIBRARY]DB_COMPETITIVE_HELP.NOTE".
Extract the topics called "Rdb-Technical", "Oracle-Technical", "Oracle
-marketing". One article particularly an interest to you is the
one titled "Rdb/VMS v3.0 vs ORACLE v5.1.17". It has most of the
knockoff points that I think you are looking for. Of course, it
is for v5 of ORACLE. There are v6. information on the same notes
file (topics 2.9-2.12). These notes are good start and won't take
you too long to read.
2. Another specialist in our office has put together a prelimilary
document on comparing Rdb and Oracle. Soon as I finish gathering
and summarzing my findings, I will combine mine to his document.
Hopefully, within the next few days we will be able to enter the
final document in the notes file for others to view. (Most likely
I will use DB_COMPETITIVE_HELP notes file). Watch for its coming!
I hope this reply help you, at least where to start searching.

The new Slide Show for field use is based heavily on what we do
that Oracle doesn't. We don't mention Oracle by name, but it clearly
differentiates us from them. You can order it from the corporate
slide library. Use #863. It's scripted.
