181.0. "ORACLE to Rdb Conversion" by MTA::MENDES (AI is better than no I at all) Wed Aug 24 1988 22:38
We have a customer running an application with ORACLE on a VAX cluster.
They are experiencing a number of problems, notably deteriorating
performance. Monitor shows plenty of CPU cycles and negligible queue
depths for the disks. The performance problem appears to be due to
ORACLE's habit of locking tables (files) instead of rows (records)
during updating.
The customer can wait for ORACLE's latest and greatest (V6 and TPS),
but to benefit from them, they have to pay a hefty sum for TPS and then
have to modify their code to take advantage of its features. We will be
taking inventory of their current system (how many modules, what size,
which are SQL, SQL FORMS, PL/1, etc.), and looking at what it takes to
convert them to Rdb, VAX SQL and whatever else it takes.
Does anyone have any experience with this? Are there any useful tools
in existence?
Constraints: We cannot propose additional hardware, and probably can't
propose any third-party software. Otherwise, MIS will dictate migration
to IBM MVS and DB2.
This note is being posted in the Rdb, Rdb_Competition and Conversion
notes conferences. If I get any really good info, I'll cross post the
replies.
