I have a customer who has requested a replacement system for A BRITTON
LEE IDM/500. What are we using as competition for this database
machine? They have a frontend to it which is an old 11/750 that
we are upgrading or replacing. They are using OMNIBASE?SMARTSTAR
on the Britton Lee. The RFP request includes a replacement, software
conversion, data conversion, and application conversion to the new
machine. As I am a networking person and this is really out of
my league, any help would be greatly appreciated.

| I believe that with RDB/VMS 3.0, our performance is close to what
the Britton Lee could do. SMARTSTAR works well with RDB although
I'm not sure of the conversion effort between OMNIBASE/SMARTSTAR
and the current version for RDB. What is the application? What
are the stats on transactions and rates? Maybe the whole thing
can be replaced with a 6240? More information is needed, but you
don't necessarily need a database machine.

| If you're replacing a 750, you might even get away with a MicroVAX
3600 or VAX 6210. But you do need to know more about the application,
    database sizes, transaction rates, etc.
