Perhaps I missed something in the documentation or just didn't
understand what I did read, in which case please feel free to
beat me up and point me to the right place, but I can't figure
out how to get tables and figures pointed to by the index.
Can someone give me a quick example of the way to do that?

See note 118 and replies (esp. .7) for a discussion of index entries
in figures. That coding should work for examples as well. I don't
know of any problems with index pointers to tables; index entries
within the <table>/<endtable> tags should take you right to the table.
